About the role
The Sterile Processing Technician (SPT) plays a crucial role in ensuring that surgical instruments and equipment are properly processed, cleaned, packaged, and sterilized to maintain a safe and sterile environment for patient care.
Responsibilities
- Process items using sterilization or high-level disinfection methods
- Handle and care for surgical instruments and supplies
- Package and prepare applicable supplies for sterilization
- Perform decontamination, cleaning, assembly, sterilization, storage, and distribution of reusable surgical instrumentation and equipment
- Comply with OSHA, JCHO, and AAMI standards and recommendations
- Communicate effectively with other members of the healthcare team
- Solve problems related to instrument processing and distribution
Requirements
- Knowledge of sterilization principles and hospital supplies for distribution
- Knowledge of surgical instrument names and use; sterilizer operations
- OSHA, JCHO, and AAMI standards and recommendations
- Customer service skills
- Effective communication skills
- Problem-solving skills
- Meditech experience a plus
Qualifications
- Certified Registered Central Service Tech (CRCST) Certification through IAHCSMM.
- Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Tech (CSPDT) Certification through CBSPD.
- Certified Instrument Specialist (CIS) preferred.
