About the Role

Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the maintenance of streets and storm drainage systems while operating a variety of equipment and trucks used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities. Work in both team environments and independently under the direct supervision of the Streets Crew Chief/Supervisor.

Responsibilities

  • Operate specialized light and heavy equipment, tools, and vehicles.
  • Perform manual labor tasks to maintain streets, storm drains infrastructure, and City facilities.
  • Assist in resurfacing, oiling, patching, sweeping, grading, and shaping roads, as well as digging and filling holes.
  • Clear and repair roadways, shoulders, and adjoining areas of trash, brush, weeds, and debris.
  • Assist in the installation and maintenance of traffic control devices and perform traffic control activities as needed.
  • Inspect, clean, and perform routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment; report mechanical issues.
  • Complete assigned duties, maintain a clean job site and work area, and keep tools clean.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License (Commercial Driver’s License preferred).
  • One year of experience involving the use of light to heavy equipment is preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training.

Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge: General knowledge of light to heavy equipment operating principles; working knowledge of hazards and safety precautions; basic knowledge of methods, materials, and tools used in streets and utility maintenance.
  • Judgment & Decision Making: Ability to analyze job orders, identify potential problems, and establish priorities.
  • Critical Thinking: Problem-solving and mechanical skills for assessing work orders.
  • Coordination of Work: Ability to manage workload, assist team members, and train new workers.
  • Communication: Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to follow written and oral instructions and maintain working relationships with coworkers, other departments, and the public.

Tools & Equipment Used

  • Motorized vehicles and equipment: patching truck, backhoe, dump truck, pickup truck, utility truck, street sweeper, street roller, tamper, plate compactor.
  • Tools: saws, pumps, oil distributor, compressors, sanders, generators, hand and power tools (shovels, wrenches), detection devices, mobile radio, and various phone types.

Physical Demands

  • Frequently required to sit, stand, crawl, talk, hear, and use hands to operate tools or controls.
  • Must occasionally lift up to 25 pounds and lift/carry up to 100 pounds with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Work is primarily performed outdoors, exposed to extreme heat in summer and cold in winter.
  • Exposure to wet/humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, electrical shock risk, and vibration.
  • Frequent exposure to loud noise levels.
