Steel Estimator
About the role
The Steel Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for structural steel and miscellaneous metals projects. This role requires strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate effectively with project managers, engineers, and clients.
Responsibilities
- Review project plans, specifications, and related documents to develop a thorough understanding of project scope and requirements.
- Prepare detailed cost estimates for labor, materials, subcontractors, and equipment.
- Develop and manage bids, ensuring all cost elements are included and accurately represented.
- Solicit and analyze quotes from suppliers, fabricators, and subcontractors.
- Perform quantity takeoffs and material breakdowns using on-screen takeoff software and other estimating tools.
- Use bid data to prepare cost analyses, forecasts, and competitive pricing strategies.
- Present estimates, proposals, and supporting documentation to management and stakeholders.
- Build and maintain relationships with vendors and clients to support competitive pricing and quality service.
- Collaborate with project teams to transition awarded projects from estimating to execution.
- Aid in developing standard estimating templates, tools, and processes to improve efficiency.
Qualifications
- Highly organized, thorough, and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple estimates simultaneously.
- Strong report writing, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with personnel at all organizational levels.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook) and on-screen takeoff software.
- Previous experience in structural steel and miscellaneous metals estimating preferred.
- Strong analytical and mathematical skills with an understanding of construction drawings and specifications.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field preferred.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in steel or mechanical estimating preferred.
- Ability to work on-site in Avon, MA and travel occasionally to field locations as needed.
- Strong initiative and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Fully fluent in English (read, speak, and write).
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Must be currently authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship.
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Occasional walking, standing, or moving between office and field environments.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
- Visual acuity to read detailed plans, drawings, and specifications.
Work Schedule
Standard Monday–Friday schedule (40 hours per week). Occasional evening or weekend work may be required based on project deadlines.
