About the Role

Facilities Maintenance Operations (FMO) offers building and landscape maintenance, and custodial services to Harvard faculties and departments on a fee-for-service basis. All services are provided in strict accordance with customer-determined standards. FMO operates as an in-house alternative to contractor services and manages itself under principles guiding any successful maintenance service business.

Responsibilities

• Installs, modifies, and repairs all types of boilers, heating systems, cooling systems, and auxiliary equipment.
• Fabricates, installs, modifies, and repairs high and low pressure piping systems.
• Interprets mechanical plans and prints and updates as necessary.
• Assists and advises customers on progress/status of work and provides responsive customer support in all phases of building maintenance operations.
• Performs all installation, maintenance, inspection, and testing in accordance with applicable standards and requirements of the Massachusetts State Building Code and/or established compliance requirements.
• Observes and complies with all standard safety codes and practices; performs all work in accordance with recognized trade and University standards.
• May work independently or as part of a multi-trade team under the guidance of the Area Supervisor and/or Working Foreperson.
• Works in research laboratory environments and around hazardous materials.
• Accepts a reasonable amount of overtime in support of group business needs.
• Wears/uses appropriate safety clothing/equipment at all times; maintains a professional image and wears a uniform.
• Supplies a complete set of hand tools.
• Performs other core skills of the trades and related duties as required.

Working Conditions

• Emergency Status: Critical Operations Personnel (required to provide on-site support during emergency situations as determined by management).
• Must stoop, bend, and work in awkward positions for extended periods, including on hands and knees.
• Routinely walks to and from various buildings carrying tools and equipment.
• Lifts a minimum of 50 lbs; pushes, pulls, and transports piping and equipment in excess of 200 lbs with others (may use chain falls and come-alongs for heavier lifting).
• Works alone, in confined spaces, and in extreme temperatures.
• Climbs multiple sets of stairs and works off ladders, staging, lifts, or other elevated platforms.

Requirements

• Minimum five years of experience installing and maintaining commercial or institutional scale heating and cooling systems.
• Skilled in all aspects of steamfitting/pipefitting work, with particular experience in the maintenance of district heating and cooling systems.
• Massachusetts State License required: Journeyman or Master Pipefitter’s license (preferred) for a minimum of five years.
• Five years’ experience maintaining Steam or Hot Water Systems.
• Valid State driver’s license with a driving history satisfactory to meet Campus Services standards.
• Pass a Respiratory Physical and obtain certification for respirator use.
• Proficient in the use of industry-recognized diagnostic testing and troubleshooting equipment.
• Able to perform mathematical calculations required for sizing and installing system components.
• Able to read and interpret detailed plans, specifications, operating manuals, and other trade-related materials.
• Effectively communicates and interacts with peers and customers.
• Receives specialized training in the inspection and testing of steam traps or other devices.
• Basic keyboard proficiency and understanding of Windows®-based software.

• Standard Hours: 40 hours per week
• Sunday: Off
• Monday: 6:00am - 2:30pm
• Tuesday: 6:00am - 2:30pm
• Wednesday: 6:00am - 2:30pm
• Thursday: 6:00am - 2:30pm
• Friday: 6:00am - 2:30pm
• Saturday: Off

$52.34/hour
