Steam Turbine Engineer III/Specialist - open to Texas, Midwest, East locations

Job Summary

A corporate level position supporting NRG’s fleet of steam turbines across the country. The Steam Turbine Engineer/Specialist will provide on-site support for field inspections, condition assessments, and run, repair, replace recommendations. They will coordinate repair activities with various repair shops and suppliers. They will assist in developing and/or reviewing quality plans and monitor and audit supplier quality. They will communicate with customers regarding the condition of equipment and repair work scope. They will inspect completed work or work in progress to assure job quality. They will perform field inspections and take field measurements. They will coordinate activities with vendors/contractors, other divisions, and departments. They will recognize problems and be proactive in helping to resolve them. They will perform root cause analysis of system and equipment problems. They will develop quality work plans when required. They will perform engineering calculations in their area of responsibility. They will assist in outage planning and economic evaluation of turbine projects as needed. They may be required to manage projects in their area of expertise.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Safeguards and emphasizes the importance of safety and environmental programs
• Evaluates component condition and repair options and performs risk assessment for maintenance activities
• Participates and/or leads teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units
• Communicates with customers regarding the condition of equipment and repair work scope
• Inspects completed work or work in progress to assure job quality
• Performs field inspections and takes field measurements
• Collaborates with Vendors/Contractors, other divisions, and departments
• Recognizes problems and is proactive in helping to resolve them
• Performs root cause analysis of system and equipment problems
• Develops quality work plans when required
• Performs engineering calculations in their area of responsibility
• Assists in outage planning and economic evaluation of turbine projects as needed
• May be required to manage projects in their area of expertise
• Ensures company resources are used in a cost-effective manner
• Prepares written reports in their assigned area of responsibility
• Performs technical duties in their area of responsibility
• Develops and maintains technical specifications for purchase of replacement parts, vendor repairs, and maintenance standards
• Identifies and implements new or existing repair technology in their area of responsibility
• Tracks AIB/TIL’s for steam/generators and assesses implementation and compliance strategy
• Qualifies vendors and suppliers for parts and services in their area of responsibility

Working Conditions

• Hybrid work environment with office opportunities in Houston, Pittsburgh, or Princeton along with NRG Plant locations in the Midwest, East, and Texas.
• Normal office environment and/or outside work environment (including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas at generating plants)
• Requires travel to and from NRG plants or vendor facilities across the country (approx. 20% of the time)
• Requires operation of a motor vehicle and a valid drivers license
• Requires personal protective safety equipment while in the plants
• Overtime or non-standard hours may be required
• Requires operating a personal computer

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum of Baccalaureate Degree in appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and 5 years of experience in steam or gas turbine equipment maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting.
• Or, a minimum of 10 years of experience in steam or gas turbine equipment maintenance/repair, operations, and troubleshooting.
• All positions at NRG will require at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Fundamental knowledge of vibration analysis and balancing of large rotating equipment
• Fundamental knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of steam turbines and components
• Fundamental knowledge of control systems for large steam turbines
• Fundamental knowledge of GE, Siemens, Westinghouse Steam turbines

Preferred Qualifications

• An Engineering degree and minimum 15 years of experience in steam or gas turbine engineering, maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting
• Minimum of 20 years of experience in maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting of steam or gas turbines
• Training and experience in vibration analysis and balancing of large rotating equipment
• Knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of steam turbines and components
• Knowledge of mechanical hydraulic control systems for large steam turbines

Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Effective communication skills with craft personnel, site leadership, as well as management
• Ability to take a leadership role in meetings and communications around steam turbine issues
• Project management skills
• Knowledge of power plant systems
• Knowledge of turbine repair processes
• Ability to prepare written reports and presentations to management

Physical Requirements

• Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment access, inspect or collect data on plant equipment.

Compensation

The base salary range for this position is: $98,480 - $162,480*

*The base salary range above represents the low and high end of the salary range for this position. Actual salaries will vary based on several factors including but not limited to location, experience, and performance. The range listed is just one component of the total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include annual bonus, short- and long-term incentives, and program-specific awards.
