Steam Turbine Engineer III/Specialist - open to Texas, Midwest, East locations

Job Summary

A corporate level position supporting NRG’s fleet of steam turbines across the country. The Steam Turbine Engineer/Specialist will provide on-site support for field inspections, condition assessments, and run, repair, replace recommendations. They will coordinate repair activities with various repair shops and suppliers. They will assist in developing and/or reviewing quality plans, monitor and audit supplier quality, and communicate with customers regarding the condition of equipment and repair work scope.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Evaluates component condition and repair options and performs risk assessment for maintenance activities
• Communicates with customers regarding condition of equipment and repair work scope
• Inspects completed work or work in progress to assure job quality
• Performs field inspections and takes field measurements
• Captures and audits supplier quality
• Participates and/or leads teams that focus on specific problem areas or needs for generating units
• Recognizes problems and is proactive in helping to resolve them
• Performs root cause analysis of system and equipment problems
• Develops quality work plans when required
• Performs engineering calculations in area of responsibility
• Assists in outage planning and economic evaluation of turbine projects as needed
• May be required to manage projects in area of expertise
• Ensures company resources are used in a cost-effective manner
• Prepares written reports in assigned area of responsibility
• Performs technical duties in area of responsibility
• Develops and maintains technical specifications for purchase of replacement parts, vendor repairs, and maintenance standards
• Identifies and implements new or existing repair technology in area of responsibility
• Tracks AIB/TIL’s for steam/generators and assesses implementation and compliance strategy
• Qualifies vendors and suppliers for parts and services in area of responsibility

Working Conditions

• Hybrid work environment with office opportunities in Houston, Pittsburgh, or Princeton along with NRG Plant locations in the Midwest, East, and Texas
• Normal office environment and/or outside work environment (including working at heights, high/low ambient temperatures, and high humidity areas at generating plants)
• Requires travel to and from NRG plants or vendor facilities across the country (approx. 20% of the time)
• Requires operation of a motor vehicle and a valid drivers license
• Requires personal protective safety equipment while in the plants
• Overtime or non-standard hours may be required
• Requires operating a personal computer

Minimum Requirements

• Minimum of Baccalaureate Degree in appropriate Engineering discipline from an accredited college or university and 5 years of experience in steam or gas turbine equipment maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting
• Or, a minimum of 10 years of experience in steam or gas turbine equipment maintenance/repair, operations, and troubleshooting
• All positions at NRG will require at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent
• Fundamental knowledge of vibration analysis and balancing of large rotating equipment
• Fundamental knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of steam turbines and components
• Fundamental knowledge of control systems for large steam turbines
• Fundamental knowledge of GE, Siemens, Westinghouse Steam turbines

Preferred Qualifications

• An Engineering degree and minimum 15 years of experience in steam or gas turbine engineering, maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting
• Minimum of 20 years of experience in maintenance, operations, and troubleshooting of steam or gas turbines
• Training and experience in vibration analysis and balancing of large rotating equipment
• Knowledge of working materials and metallurgy of steam turbines and components
• Knowledge of mechanical hydraulic control systems for large steam turbines

• Effective communication skills with craft personnel, site leadership, as well as management
• Ability to take a leadership role meetings and communications around steam turbine issues
• Project management skills
• Knowledge of power plant systems
• Knowledge of turbine repair processes
• Ability to prepare written reports and presentations to management

Physical Requirements

• Requires standing, sitting, walking, kneeling, twisting, climbing stairs and ladders, and entering plant equipment access, inspect or collect data on plant equipment.
