Stationary Engineer (Provisional)

About the role

Stationary Engineers operate, maintain, and adjust steam power plant and electro-mechanical building equipment under supervision. They are responsible for boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, cooling towers, and associated systems for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting in public buildings, municipal pumping stations, and incinerators. The role includes periodic inspections, minor repairs, preventive maintenance, record-keeping, report writing, and may involve directing subordinate personnel, operating control consoles, and instructing others.

Responsibilities

• Operate, maintain, and adjust boilers, furnaces, engines, pumps, heat exchangers, generators, motors, chillers, cooling towers, and related HVAC, lighting, and building systems.
• Conduct periodic inspections and perform minor repairs to equipment.
• Perform preventive maintenance and take charge of a watch, directing subordinate personnel when assigned.
• Operate control consoles in control rooms as needed.
• Prepare requisitions for materials and spare parts; instruct and train subordinates and other personnel.
• Read meters, gauges, and recording devices; log data; keep records and write reports.
• Inspect low pressure boilers in accordance with NYC Department of Buildings unified inspection procedures when directed.
• May operate a motor vehicle and perform related duties.

Special Working Conditions

• Work various shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays.
• Work in confined areas such as boiler rooms, heating rooms, and ventilating rooms.
• Physical activities include walking up and down stairs, climbing ladders, handling chemicals, and exposure to hazardous materials such as asbestos and infectious waste.

Requirements

• Possess a valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license issued by the New York City Department of Buildings. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
• For certain positions, obtain within 90 days of appointment a valid certificate of fitness for Standpipe, Automatic Sprinkler, and/or Air Compressor issued by the New York City Fire Department.
• Ability to understand and be understood in English to perform the duties of the position.
• Must pass a drug screening to be appointed or promoted.
• Hold a valid New York State Motor Vehicle Driver License with no disqualifying restrictions; maintain this license for the duration of employment.
• Proof of identity and right to work in the United States is required.

Qualifications

For promotional candidates: Must be permanently employed as a High Pressure Plant Tender and possess a valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license.

For external candidates and MTA employees not in the eligible title: Must possess a valid High Pressure Boiler Operating Engineer license issued by the New York City Department of Buildings.

Pay

The current minimum salary for Stationary Engineer is $73.90 per hour for a 40-hour week. This rate is subject to change.
