About the role

Responsible on a shift for the operation and maintenance of a combined high-pressure heating and central refrigeration plant - OR - in a very large facility, has responsibility on a shift for assignments which include either the operation and maintenance of a high-pressure heating plant or refrigeration plant - OR - is assigned to a geographic area of major multi-hospital medical center which requires maintenance and operation of steam reducing stations, ventilation and refrigeration equipment, and various mechanical and electrical equipment and controls.

Responsibilities

  • Operates, maintains, repairs, and tests high-pressure steam or hot water boilers, refrigeration, air conditioning, or other auxiliary distribution systems exceeding 500 H.P. in boiler capacity or a total refrigeration capacity of 1200 tons in a plant.
  • Maintains and inspects various types of meters, gauges, automatic recording devices for equipment readings, at periodic intervals or as needed, to verify operating conditions, detect malfunctions/need for repair, and to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Adjusts, maintains, tests, and calibrates boiler and air conditioning machinery and mechanical, electrical or pneumatic control instruments and safety devices.
  • Tests boiler water, condensate, cooling tower water, and water from other systems, and adds corrective chemicals or adjusts chemical pumps as needed.
  • Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and maintains refrigeration units for food storage boxes.
  • Inspects, maintains, and adjusts oxygen and vacuum systems for proper pressure and operating conditions.
  • Tests, operates, and maintains emergency diesel-powered electric generating equipment, and synchronizes electronic controls and Automatic Transfer Switches.
  • Monitors, updates, and maintains logs of plant operations and records maintenance and repair work performed, including fuel logs and fuel storage tanks.
  • Works with outside contractors and verifies work is satisfactorily completed as assigned.
  • Requests quotes from vendors for equipment, parts, tools, or service and generates purchase orders as assigned.

    Requirements

    • Completion of a Stationary Engineer's or Operation/Maintenance Engineer's apprentice program.* OR
    • Five (5) years of experience in the operation and maintenance of high or low pressure gas or oil fired boilers and auxiliary equipment, one (1) year of which must have been in the operation and maintenance of refrigeration equipment.
    • One (1) year of classroom training from a trade school, college, a branch of military service, or other equivalent accredited school** in the operation, maintenance, and repair of refrigeration equipment, combustion controls or industrial controls equipment, boilers, or water treatment systems related to power plant operations, in any combination, may be substituted for one year of the required special experience.
    • A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to use an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.
    • An Unlimited Steam Engineer's License issued by the City of Los Angeles' Department of Building and Safety.
    • EPA approved Universal Technician Certificate in compliance with Federal license requirements as provided in Chapter V, Section 608.
    • Additional experience in the operation and maintenance of high or low pressure gas or oil fired boilers, auxiliary equipment and refrigeration equipment.

    Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Approved Universal Technician Certificate

    To receive credit for your education, include a legible copy of your official transcript from an accredited institution within seven (7) days of filing your application. The document should show the number of units and the type of unit system used (e.g., semester, quarter) and be in English. If not in English, then translation is required. International degrees must be evaluated for equivalency to US standards and indicate the number of units and unit system. Include official copies of all relevant documents.
