Stationary Engineer

Nashville General Hospital seeks an experienced Stationary Engineer (SE) to support the safe, reliable, efficient, and continuous operation of essential hospital utility and building systems. This role directly supports patient care by maintaining infrastructure required for clinical, surgical, diagnostic, emergency, and support services, including temperature, humidity, and pressure control in critical spaces such as procedure and operating rooms.

Responsibilities

• Critical Facility Systems Operations
  • Operate, monitor, inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair critical hospital infrastructure, including boilers/steam systems, chillers/chilled water, HVAC, air-handling and ventilation systems, refrigeration, pumps, motors, compressors, fans, emergency generators, mechanical utilities, BAS, and other central plant/facility equipment.
  • Monitor temperature, pressure, flow, level, vibration, alarms, and system status; conduct routine equipment rounds and inspections to identify abnormal conditions, safety concerns, deterioration, and potential failures.
  • Perform preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance in accordance with schedules, manufacturer recommendations, regulatory requirements, and hospital standards.
  • Diagnose mechanical/facility-system problems, determine corrective action, perform qualified adjustments and repairs, and escalate when specialized support is required.
  • Respond promptly to equipment failures, utility interruptions, BAS alarms, environmental concerns, and other facility issues while maintaining systems that support uninterrupted patient care.
• Building Automation Systems & Controls
  • Operate and monitor BAS to maintain appropriate environmental conditions and optimize facility performance.
  • Monitor HVAC controls, alarms, trends, schedules, setpoints, sensors, meters, and automated systems; analyze trends to identify developing failures and opportunities for improved reliability.
  • Troubleshoot sensors, actuators, valves, dampers, alarms, schedules, setpoints, and related controls; make appropriate adjustments within established parameters.
  • Maintain working knowledge of JCI Metasys, Siemens, or comparable building-control platforms and use BAS data to support energy management and operational efficiency.
• Healthcare Environment & Regulatory Compliance
  • Operate and maintain systems in a manner that protects patient and staff safety, infection prevention, environmental conditions, and uninterrupted clinical operations.
  • Understand the relationship between facility infrastructure and patient-care areas, including operating rooms, emergency services, diagnostic areas, inpatient units, behavioral health, and other critical departments.
  • Support compliance with healthcare, life-safety, environmental, occupational safety, and facility-management standards, including The Joint Commission, NFPA 99, NFPA 101 Life Safety Code, ASHRAE 170, and applicable federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Support regulatory surveys, inspections, testing, documentation, and corrective actions; ensure maintenance and inspection records are complete and accurate.
  • Immediately communicate conditions that may create a safety risk, regulatory concern, environmental issue, or threat to patient care.
• Emergency Power & Utility Response
  • Respond to utility failures, equipment malfunctions, HVAC failures, environmental concerns, water/steam issues, emergency power events, and other infrastructure disruptions.
  • Support operation, inspection, testing, and maintenance of emergency generators and related equipment.
  • Respond to BAS and critical equipment alarms and take appropriate action to stabilize affected systems.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, utility management, downtime response, and hospital emergency operations; assist with utility-failure procedures and contingency plans.
  • Promptly communicate significant facility conditions to Facilities leadership and affected departments and maintain readiness during severe weather and other unplanned events.
• Preventive Maintenance & Reliability
  • Execute preventive and predictive maintenance to maximize equipment life, reliability, and performance.
  • Identify recurring failures and recommend corrective actions to reduce downtime and maintenance costs.
  • Evaluate equipment condition and performance and recommend repairs, replacement, or upgrades.
  • Maintain accurate equipment inventories, maintenance schedules, operating procedures, and technical documentation.
  • Identify potential system failures before they affect patient-care operations whenever possible.
• Documentation & CMMS
  • Accurately document inspections, readings, preventive maintenance, repairs, troubleshooting, adjustments, deficiencies, and corrective actions.
  • Maintain complete and timely records in the hospital's Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Maintain records required for regulatory compliance, equipment history, preventive maintenance, and operational planning; review maintenance history and trends to identify reliability opportunities.
• Projects, Construction & System Improvements
  • Support renovation, construction, equipment replacement, commissioning, and infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Collaborate with Facilities leadership, engineers, contractors, vendors, and hospital departments during installation, testing, commissioning, startup, shutdown, balancing, and return-to-service activities.
  • Provide technical expertise regarding equipment condition, system performance, repairs, and operational considerations.
  • Help minimize disruption to patient care and critical hospital operations during construction and renovation.
  • Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency, equipment reliability, system performance, and facility operations; participate in special Facilities projects as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Associate degree in Engineering, Facilities Management, Mechanical Systems, HVAC, Industrial Maintenance, or related technical field preferred.
• 9–14 years of progressively responsible experience in stationary engineering, healthcare facilities, central plant operations, commercial building operations, industrial maintenance, or related technical environments preferred.
• Healthcare facilities experience strongly preferred.
• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required.
• Boiler Operator License preferred and/or ability to obtain applicable certification within a designated timeframe.
• Valid Tennessee Driver's License required.
• Demonstrated experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting complex mechanical and facility systems, including HVAC, boilers, chillers, refrigeration, generators, pumps, motors, compressors, air-handling equipment, and mechanical utilities.
• Demonstrated BAS experience, including alarms, controls, sensors, setpoints, schedules, trends, and system monitoring. Experience with JCI Metasys, Siemens, PRIMEX, or comparable systems preferred.
• Knowledge of fire alarm, life-safety, emergency power, and other critical facility systems preferred.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and CMMS; ability to read mechanical drawings, schematics, equipment manuals, specifications, operating procedures, and technical documentation.
• Strong mechanical aptitude, analytical troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to independently diagnose problems, determine corrective action, recognize when escalation/vendor support is required, prioritize multiple assignments, and respond effectively to urgent and emergency situations.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work effectively with clinical, administrative, technical, and Facilities staff.

Schedule

The position primarily works daytime hours but requires flexibility for facility emergencies, utility interruptions, critical equipment failures, severe weather, after-hours needs, and other events affecting hospital operations.
