Job Responsibilities

Enforces state and federal laws governing commercial motor vehicles.

Protects the motoring public by preventing accidents and removing unsafe drivers and vehicles from South Carolina (SC) highways.

Protects SC's environment from unsafe hazardous material transportation practices.

Prevents the premature deterioration of SC bridges through size and weight enforcement.

Patrols SC highways, enforcing all motor vehicle traffic laws with primary focus on commercial motor vehicles.

Affords assistance to other government agencies and the general public in commercial motor vehicle enforcement and general law enforcement.

Conducts and/or assists with accident investigation and investigates complaints.

Conducts roadside Driver/Vehicle Examination Reports on commercial motor vehicles using the North American Inspection Standard procedures.

Proficiently operates a speed measurement device.

Safely and properly operates hand scales and permanent scale facilities to conduct size and weight enforcement.

Maintains a good working knowledge of state laws and federal rules and regulations.

Requirements

  • A high school diploma and experience performing patrol or investigative duties with a public law enforcement agency.
  • A bachelor's degree may be substituted for the required law enforcement experience.
  • Must be a US citizen and at least 21 years of age.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with the public, co-workers and supervisors.
  • Must be a resident of South Carolina and have a valid South Carolina driver's license prior to the effective date of hire.
  • Selected applicants must attend and successfully complete the State Transport Police Training Program.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively, stand for extended periods of time, the flexibility to work in various positions (e.g., crouching, kneeling, lying, sitting, standing) and the strength to lift and carry approximately 100 pounds.
  • Must be able to perform all essential and marginal job functions of a State Transport Police Officer.

Benefits

Starting salary for uncertified new hires is $57,361 annually.
