About the role

The State Tax Manager – Advisory/Controversy role at Koch is designed for a proactive and skilled tax professional who wants to contribute to a dynamic and innovative team. This position offers hands-on experience in state tax management, technical research, and cross-functional communication.

Responsibilities

  • Support a senior tax leader in managing state income tax positions.
  • Manage state notice and audit IDR responses to drive value to the controversy capability in collaboration with the reporting team.
  • Conduct thorough research on state law and proposed legislative changes to stay current with evolving tax environments and assess impacts to Koch’s business operations.
  • Collaborate with the business units and other key stakeholders to communicate potential state tax impacts, align on tax positions, and answer technical questions to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Requirements

  • Foundational knowledge of state income tax (public accounting, law, or corporate tax experience preferred).
  • Eager to learn with strong analytical, research, and communication skills.
  • Collaborative, organized, and able to manage multiple priorities.
  • Motivated to grow into a technical expert and trusted resource for the business.
  • Able to analyze and interpret statutes, regulations, and case law.
  • Experience supporting or managing state tax positions.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Taxation, Accounting, or related discipline; or CPA, JD, or other relevant professional certifications.
  • Experience with multistate tax issues and controversies.
  • Proficiency in modeling and using tools such as Alteryx, PowerBI, and/or Tableau.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions.

Skills

Technical analysis of state tax impacts and optimization of those impacts for recurring and discrete business operations, managing state notice and audit IDR responses, conducting thorough research on state law, and proposed legislative changes, collaborating with the business units and other key stakeholders to communicate potential state tax impacts, align on tax positions, and answer technical questions to both technical and non-technical audiences.

Schedule

This role can be based out of our Atlanta, GA, Plano, TX or Wichita, KS office.
