About the role

In this role, we would entrust you to work extensively with teachers and administration to help students improve their learning skills. Along with other duties as needed, you will:

• Provide specific strategies for teaching and supporting students with the development of motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness
• Collaborate with classroom teachers as well as support staff, monitor student progress, and coordinate assessments as necessary
• Support student growth through teamwork

This position is located at the Albert J. Solnit Children’s Center – South Campus in Middletown, a state-run facility nationally recognized for its family-centered care. We serve youth facing significant emotional and psychiatric challenges, offering intensive support in a therapeutic, team-based setting.

Responsibilities

• Teaches early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject, and/or special education curricula
• Develops educational plans for individuals and groups tailored to students' abilities
• Sets short and long-term goals and evaluates student progress
• Participates in planning team meetings and case review conferences assessing student behavior
• Relates to professionals in ancillary educational roles
• Maintains student records and writes reports
• May hold conferences with parents or officials concerned with student's performance
• Performs related work as required

Requirements

• Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college
• Valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment (Special Education 165 certification required)
• Current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license may be required

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working with students with mental health concerns in a hospital setting
• Experience teaching multiple subject areas

Skills

• Knowledge of the philosophy and methods of education and teaching
• Knowledge of the principles and practices of education for special needs populations
• Knowledge of student program needs and goal setting
• Ability to motivate students and communicate at the appropriate level
• Ability to establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in work
• Ability to prepare written reports

Schedule

• Full-time, 35 hours per week
• First (1st) shift: Monday - Friday, 7:50 am - 3:20 pm
