Smith Mountain Lake State Park is accepting applications for a Housekeeping Ranger position.

About the role

The housekeeping ranger's primary focus includes proper and prompt cleaning of cabins, restrooms, campground bathhouses, and other park facilities. The typical shift for this position is 10:00 am to 6:00 pm.

Responsibilities

• Efficient turnover of overnight facilities before check-in time.
• Ability to work with little or no direct supervision.
• Inventorying cabin supplies to ensure they are available for the next guest.
• Light maintenance and cleaning tasks necessary to operate state park facilities.
• Works various shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evening shifts.

Requirements

• Detail-oriented, energetic, and dependable.
• Must be 18 years or older.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
• Able to stand, bend, and work outdoors exposed to the elements.
• Basic knowledge of housekeeping procedures, equipment, and products.
• Experienced in handling multiple activities at the same time.
• Must be able to provide excellent customer service skills and interact in a team environment.
• Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
• Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form.

Qualifications

• Previous experience working in a housekeeping or janitorial setting is preferred.
• Knowledge of safety practices in the use of cleaning chemicals and supplies.
• Experience with facility cleaning and laundry handling.

Pay

Hourly range: $13.75 - $15.00

• Overnight stay discounts for DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service):
  • Free camping outside the Memorial Day to Labor Day season for sites accommodating up to six people.
  • Free Sunday–Thursday camping (excluding the night before holidays) during the Memorial Day–Labor Day period.
  • 50% off cabins (up to three bedrooms) outside the Memorial Day–Labor Day season for up to 14 nights. Two-night minimum required.
  • Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays receive a 25% discount.

Wage/seasonal positions are not eligible for Commonwealth of Virginia benefits (health care, paid leave, etc.) and are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30.
