About the role

Pocahontas State Park is seeking a dependable and motivated Mountain Bike Trail Crew Member to perform recurring grounds care, maintenance, and light construction necessary to maintain the park’s mountain biking trails. This position involves working independently in a primarily outdoor environment with varied weather conditions, including varying shifts and multiple weekends per month.

Responsibilities

• Assist the Trails Coordinator with upkeep and maintenance of Pocahontas’ three Mountain Bike Trail Systems.
• Supervise and assist with volunteer projects for the mountain bike trails.
• Perform mowing, weed eating, trail construction and rehabilitation, sawyer work, light carpentry, and heavy equipment operation.

Requirements

• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must be at least 18 years old.
• Ability to work unsupervised, independently, or in teams.
• Good communication skills.
• General knowledge of hand and/or power tools.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with carpentry or building trades.
• Experience operating heavy machinery.
• Previous trail building or maintenance experience.
• Experience working with volunteers individually or in groups.
• Sawyer experience.

Pay

Hourly range: $15.00 – $20.00

Schedule

Wage/seasonal positions are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30 and are not eligible for benefits.

DCR wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to the following overnight facility discounts at Virginia State Parks:

• Free parking or admission to all Virginia State Parks.
• Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
• Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
• Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights (two-night minimum stay required). Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays receive a 25% discount.

• Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
