About the role

The Maintenance Ranger performs recurring grounds care, maintenance, light construction, and cleaning tasks necessary to operate Virginia State Park facilities. Work includes cleaning restrooms; mowing grass; weed eating; raking/removing leaf litter, trash, and litter; cleaning other park buildings; and maintenance of park trails.

Responsibilities

• Mowing grass, raking/removing leaf litter, trash and litter removal, painting, and trail work.
• Cleaning campsites, cabins, meeting facilities, the linen storage building, and offices.
• Cutting/bundling firewood for merchandise sales.

Requirements

• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Must be available to work various shifts, including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings.
• General knowledge of the use and care of common hand and power tools and cleaning supplies.
• Ability to organize and perform routine cleaning, maintenance functions, and other duties as directed.
• Interpersonal skills to work well with other staff and park guests.
• Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
• Employment is contingent upon satisfactory completion of a criminal history background check.
• Selected candidates must complete the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form (DCR participates in E-Verify).
• A valid State Driver's License is required if operating a state or personal vehicle for agency business.

Qualifications

Small engine repair, equipment operation, carpentry, and building trade experience preferred.

Schedule

Wage/seasonal positions are limited to 1,500 hours from May 1 to April 30 and are not eligible for benefits.

• Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights (two-night minimum stay required). Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays receive a 25% discount.

DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts.
