About the role
This role is ideal if you want to specialize in state and local tax (SALT) and become a trusted advisor to middle-market and Fortune 500 clients. The SALT practice offers a full spectrum of services, including income & franchise tax, sales & use tax, real & personal property tax, unclaimed property, and voluntary disclosure & remediation. Most work is consulting-focused, allowing you to expand your skills beyond compliance in areas such as sales tax nexus, research projects, ruling requests, process review, reverse audit, credits & incentives, and property tax. You will collaborate with firm leadership and work in a fast-growing, collaborative environment that values specialty tax practices and invests in your professional growth.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted advisor to clients by providing strategic state and local tax consulting services to lower tax rates, ensure compliance, and deliver value across the spectrum of state and local taxes.
- Research state tax issues, including nexus determinations, taxability analyses, and quantification of potential liabilities.
- Respond to notices issued by state and local taxing jurisdictions.
- Provide guidance to multi-state companies on state and local tax controversies, including research and preparing written protests.
- Assist with due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects.
- Prepare memoranda on state and local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and LLCs.
- Prepare and file state and local sales tax returns for various jurisdictions for multiple clients.
- Interact and manage multiple clients in a deadline-oriented environment while maintaining exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.
- Analyze large amounts of client data.
- Maintain internal relationships with colleagues, other service lines, and engagement/project teams.
- Develop and retain technical tax expertise.
- Proactively identify and communicate issues as they arise.
- Maintain a positive and “team player” attitude.
- Become familiar with and adhere to the firm’s policies and procedures.
- Apply a working knowledge of various computer applications.
- Learn and grow from direct on-the-job coaching and mentoring, as well as participating in firm-wide learning and development programs.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master's degree in accounting, law, or a related business degree with sufficient coursework and credits to sit for the CPA and/or Bar exam in the state you are being considered.
- Outstanding academic performance with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Demonstrated skills in time management, communication, interpersonal skills, relationship building, collaboration, and problem-solving.
- Strong leadership, project management, organizational, and analytical skills, along with initiative and adaptability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
- Must be a current Summer 2026 Baker Tilly Intern.

Pay
Actual compensation is influenced by skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees, professional certifications, work arrangements, and geographic location. The pay rate ranges for this position are as follows:
- Washington: $80,500 to $110,610
- California: $78,000 to $100,950
- Tewksbury, MA: $78,000 to $100,950
- National pay rate range: $63,200 to $119,820
