About the role
This role within the State & Local Tax (SALT) practice offers the opportunity to specialize in tax and become a trusted expert for clients. The SALT practice provides a full spectrum of services including income & franchise tax, sales & use tax, real & personal property tax, unclaimed property, and voluntary disclosure & remediation tailored to industry needs.
You will work directly with CFOs, owners, and leaders from middle-market and Fortune 500 companies to solve complex state and local tax challenges. The role is primarily consulting-focused, allowing you to expand your skills in areas such as sales tax nexus, research projects, ruling requests, process review, reverse audit, credits & incentives, and property tax.
Responsibilities
- Serve as a trusted advisor to middle-market and Fortune 500 clients by providing strategic state and local tax consulting services to lower tax rates, ensure compliance, and deliver value across the spectrum of state and local taxes.
- Research state tax issues, including nexus determinations, taxability analyses, and quantification of potential liabilities.
- Respond to notices issued by state and local taxing jurisdictions.
- Provide guidance on state and local tax controversies, including research and preparing written protests for multi-state companies.
- Assist with due diligence and voluntary disclosure projects.
- Prepare memoranda on state and local tax issues for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and LLCs.
- Prepare and file state and local sales tax returns for various jurisdictions for multiple clients.
- Interact and manage multiple clients in a deadline-oriented environment while maintaining exceptional accuracy and attention to detail.
- Analyze large amounts of client data.
- Maintain internal relationships with colleagues, other service lines, and engagement/project teams.
- Develop and retain technical tax expertise.
- Proactively identify and communicate issues as they arise.
- Maintain a positive and “team player” attitude.
- Become familiar with and adhere to the firm’s policies and procedures.
- Apply a working knowledge of various computer applications.
- Learn and grow from direct on-the-job coaching and mentoring, along with participating in firm-wide learning and development programs.

Requirements
- Bachelor’s or master's degree in accounting or law, or a related degree in business, with sufficient coursework and credits to sit for the CPA and/or Bar exam in the state you are being considered.
- Outstanding academic performance required, with a preferred GPA of 3.0 or above.
- Demonstrated skills in time management, communication, interpersonal skills, relationship building, collaboration, and problem-solving.
- Strong leadership, project management, organizational, and analytical skills, along with initiative and adaptability.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Suite.
- Must be a current Summer 2026 Baker Tilly Intern.

Pay
- Washington: $80,500 to $110,610
- California: $78,000 to $100,950
- Tewksbury, MA: $78,000 to $100,950
- National pay rate range: $63,200 to $119,820
Actual compensation is influenced by skills, prior experience, qualifications, degrees, professional certifications, work arrangements, and geographic location. Baker Tilly offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package to eligible employees.
