Job Summary
The SALT Manager will lead and execute a variety of state and local tax initiatives. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in sales and use tax, with additional experience in income, franchise, and gross receipts tax considered a plus. This role involves managing state tax nexus studies, conducting in-depth research, handling voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), and determining taxability of products and services.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversight of SALT projects including nexus studies, tax research, taxability determinations, and tax planning
- Leadership of sales and use tax engagements including audits, compliance, and consulting projects
- Management of state tax compliance, audits, and voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs)
- Development and implementation of SALT strategies to minimize tax liability and ensure compliance
- Advising clients on tax planning, business issues, and strategies; managing expectations and resolving tax controversies
- Conducting research on state tax legislation, apportionment, and revenue sourcing
- Mentoring and managing tax professionals, providing leadership and technical training
- Managing client communication, gathering information, and recommending process improvements
- Engagement staffing, billing, collections, and profitability targets preparation
- Technical memoranda and draft client correspondence related to SALT matters preparation
Education
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required) Advanced degree or certification preferred (e.g., Master's in Taxation, CPA, JD, CMI, Enrolled Agent)
Experience
- 7-12+ years of experience in state and local tax (SALT)
- Strong expertise in sales and use tax
- Familiarity with income, franchise, and gross receipts taxes
- Experience managing SALT projects including nexus studies, VDAs, compliance, and research
- 2+ years of leadership or supervisory experience
