Role Summary
The Refrigeration Start-Up Technician is responsible for the start-up, commissioning, and energy optimization of commercial and supermarket refrigeration systems. This role focuses on bringing newly installed systems online safely and efficiently, ensuring proper operation of parallel rack systems, controls, and Energy Management Systems (EMS).
Roles And Responsibilities
- Perform system evacuations of parallel refrigeration racks after verification of pressure testing
- Complete full start-up and commissioning of new parallel rack systems and individual refrigeration systems
- Commission oil systems, safety controls, defrost systems, and head pressure controls
- Lead small projects such as single case installations, condenser change-outs, and system modifications
- Support Energy Optimization (EO) projects, including:
- Retro-commissioning of supermarket refrigeration systems
- EMS upgrades and programming changes
- Leak detection system upgrades
- Gas conversion and utility program initiatives
- Collaborate with Service and Construction Managers between projects to assist with challenging stores, technician training, and system troubleshooting
- Provide technical guidance to junior technicians and field leadership as needed
Skills And Qualifications
- Journeyman-level refrigeration skillset with installation and construction experience
- 5–7 years of commercial refrigeration experience, with a strong focus on supermarket systems
- Strong knowledge of single systems, parallel rack systems, display cases, and walk-ins
- Advanced troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and control systems
- Experience with refrigeration oil systems, mechanical sub-cooling, and advanced defrost diagnostics
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with customers, management, and field teams
- Ability to manage priorities and work independently
- Valid driver’s license with a good driving record
- Ability to travel, work overnight, and work overtime as required
Preferred Qualifications
- 3+ years of hands-on experience with supermarket EMS systems
- EMS programming experience (CPC, Novar, Danfoss preferred)
- EMS Certification
- Universal EPA Certification
- HVAC/R technical school or accredited trade school coursework
- Prior experience supporting energy optimization or retro-commissioning projects
