Staff Wildlife Ecologist (San Joaquin Valley)

About the role

We are seeking a staff wildlife ecologist for projects in the San Joaquin Valley, Antelope Valley, and Central Coast, California. This role involves both fieldwork and office-based tasks. Field responsibilities include conducting surveys and monitoring for special-status wildlife and plant species, serving as an agency-approved designated monitor or biologist, completing habitat assessments, and assisting with research and data collection. Office responsibilities include contributing to biological resource reports, supporting regulatory permit processes, and collaborating with senior ecologists.

This position may offer in-office, remote, or hybrid opportunities based on candidate location and organizational needs.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to biological resource reports and support processes to obtain regulatory permits.
• Apply critical thinking to develop project-specific approaches that benefit the environment in collaboration with senior ecologists.
• Conduct surveys and population monitoring for rare plants and wildlife species, including San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, Tipton’s kangaroo rat, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, burrowing owl, California tiger salamander, and Swainson’s hawk.
• Perform endangered and threatened species surveys and assessments, preconstruction surveys and monitoring, and conservation land assessment, preservation, and management.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in biological studies, natural resources, wildlife management, wildlife biology, or a related discipline.

Qualifications

• 4+ years of applicable professional experience.
• Experience with special-status wildlife species and their habitats in the greater Central Valley, desert, and/or Central Coast, California, specifically with one or more of the following: San Joaquin kit fox, giant kangaroo rat, Tipton’s kangaroo rat, San Joaquin antelope squirrel, blunt-nosed leopard lizard, California tiger salamander, California red-legged frog, burrowing owl, and/or Swainson’s hawk.
• Ability to serve as a designated biological monitor or biologist for regional projects.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills.
• Strong organizational abilities and ability to work independently and within a multidisciplinary team.

Pay

$65,000–$115,000 per year, commensurate with experience and internal equity.
