About the role
The Staff Transmission Engineer will work on project teams to create world-class designs for new projects, alterations, and redevelopments, including underground and overhead high-voltage transmission lines. The role involves collaborating with the project team throughout the design and construction process, adapting transmission plans according to budget constraints, design factors, or client needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform transmission design from the conceptual phase through design completion.
- Modify and review transmission components to meet project needs and requirements set by project managers.
- Prepare transmission equipment specifications, including packaged equipment specifications, data sheets, Request for Qualifications (RFQs), technical bid summaries, and purchase recommendations.
- Perform economic conductor selection studies, lightning performance, and grounding calculations/studies.
- Compile calculations for required electrical clearances based on NESC or other applicable codes and resources.
- Prepare communications interpreting and applying necessary NERC, FERC, and regional requirements and standards.
- Apply strong knowledge of transmission engineering/design concepts, principles, practices, codes, and procedures.
- Research and compile project-related data as required by project managers, including studies and reports.
- Write specifications and update drawings provided by senior engineers to verify corrections in multiple CAD-related software.
- Compile information for client presentations, shop drawing review, and contract administration for various facility designs (e.g., power, process, pipeline, industrial, healthcare, airports, educational institutions, commercial, governmental, and military).
- Perform field inspections, measurements, or calculations for public and private clients.
- Perform other duties as assigned and comply with all policies and standards.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or a related degree from an ABET-accredited program and 3 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred).
- OR Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or related Engineering Technology from an ABET-accredited program, successful completion of the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam, and 3 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred).
- OR Master’s Degree in Civil Engineering and 2 years of transmission engineering experience (consulting preferred).
- Strong knowledge of standard civil/structural engineering techniques and procedures.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment with demonstrated critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and engineering software (e.g., AutoCAD, MicroStation, BIM (Revit), Civil 3D, PLS, PLS-CADD, RISA-3D, MathCADD, and/or hydraulic, hydrologic, pavement, or transmission analysis programs).
- Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Engineers in Training (EIT) Certification preferred.
Schedule
Full-time with up to 10% travel required.
