Staff Software Engineer (Payments)

Job Summary

We’re hiring a Staff Software Engineer to join our Payments organization on the Payouts team. The role involves building and scaling next-generation payments infrastructure, designing and implementing payout solutions, and owning critical technical decisions.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will have 8+ years of relevant experience in payment systems, including expertise in checkout/payment methods, payouts, ledgering, reconciliation, interchange, KYC/onboarding, and experience architecting services and systems using well-accepted design patterns.

Responsibilities

• Refine GoFundMe's multi-year payments strategy to grow giving through innovative use cases.
• Design and implement the end-to-end product lifecycle for payout solutions, from ideation to launch and iteration.
• Collaborate with engineers, product management, designers, and external partners to design and implement next-generation payments infrastructure.
• Own critical technical decisions across ledgering, money movement, and disbursement, anticipating future use cases and designing to minimize the cost of future change.
• Mentor other engineers through chat, code review, and pair programming, and advocate for improvements to the codebase, providing leadership to others within the team.
• Lead projects from conception to completion, balancing technical trade-offs and business needs, communicating progress and challenges to stakeholders, and keeping teams aligned with project goals.

Requirements

This role requires a seasoned technical leader with deep expertise in payment systems and a track record of building and shipping impactful features. The ideal candidate should have experience architecting services and systems using well-accepted design patterns to enable future scaling, anticipate future use cases and make design decisions that minimize the cost of future change, lead projects from conception to completion, ensure timely delivery by balancing technical trade-offs and business needs, communicate progress and challenges to stakeholders, and keep teams aligned with project goals.

Qualifications

• Strong experience analyzing, diagnosing, and preventing performance problems, with expertise in application performance monitoring and log analytics tools like New Relic and Sumo Logic.
• Preferred experience with Spring Boot, Kotlin, AWS, Kafka, Kubernetes, GraphQL, relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQL, and prior experience on a ledgering, payouts, or money-movement team at scale.

Pay

The annual U.S. salary range for this full-time position is $195,000–$293,000. The company also offers equity and other benefits to employees, including healthcare, dental, vision, life insurance, and a 401(k) savings program. In addition to this wage, there are geolocation differentials that will increase pay depending on the work location. Pay may also vary depending on other factors including skills, experience, education, or training.
