Staff Software Engineer (Frontend / UI)

Role Overview

Lead the development of Function Health's member-facing web and mobile experiences, shaping the architecture, performance, usability, and scalability of products that help people understand and act on their health data. This role requires deep frontend expertise, strong product instincts, full-stack capabilities, and technical leadership to influence how millions of users interact with their health information.

Core Responsibilities

• Frontend & Product Development

• Lead the architecture, design, and development of modern web and mobile applications using React and React Native.
• Build intuitive, performant, polished, and accessible user experiences.
• Establish and maintain frontend best practices across component architecture, state management, testing, accessibility, performance, and deployment processes.
• Maintain high standards for product quality, usability, reliability, and engineering excellence.
• Drive the evolution of shared UI component libraries and design systems.

• Full-Stack Development

• Own complex features end-to-end, from frontend experiences through backend services and APIs.
• Design, build, and maintain scalable services that power member-facing applications.
• Contribute to technical decisions across frontend, backend, infrastructure, and data systems.
• Integrate third-party services and external data platforms.
• Partner closely with Product, Design, Clinical, Data, and other stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions.

• User Experience & Performance

• Champion application performance, responsiveness, accessibility, and reliability across web and mobile platforms.
• Leverage analytics, user insights, and feedback to continuously improve product experiences.
• Ensure complex health information is presented in a clear, intuitive, and user-friendly manner.

• Technical Leadership

• Provide architectural direction and technical mentorship across the engineering organization.
• Lead high-impact initiatives from concept through launch.
• Drive engineering standards, code quality, development best practices, and scalable engineering processes.
• Help scale systems, processes, and team effectiveness to support rapid company growth.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to evaluate and adopt emerging technologies and development approaches.

Required Qualifications

• Experience

• 10+ years of software engineering experience, including significant experience building customer-facing products.
• Proven success leading complex technical initiatives in high-growth and/or startup environments.
• Experience balancing hands-on software development with technical leadership and mentorship responsibilities.

• Frontend Expertise

• Deep expertise in JavaScript/TypeScript and modern frontend development.
• Extensive experience with React and modern frontend architectures.
• Strong understanding of: Design systems, Component libraries, State management, Accessibility (WCAG), Performance optimization, Frontend testing frameworks, Modern build and deployment tooling.
• Experience building highly interactive, data-rich user interfaces.
• Experience building applications with React Native.

• Full-Stack & Backend Development

• Experience designing and building APIs and backend services.
• Strong proficiency with Python or similar backend technologies.
• Ability to work comfortably across the entire application stack.
• Experience integrating external services and data platforms.

Prefered Qualifications

• Advanced expertise with React, React Native, and TypeScript.
• Experience building large-scale consumer applications.

• Familiarity with GCP, Postgres, and modern web architecture patterns.
