Staff RN - Emergency (West)

About the Role

The Emergency RN performs therapeutic nursing interventions consistent with the Emergency Department, including:

• ACLS/PALS protocols
• Arrhythmia detection and treatment
• Airway management
• Wound care
• Pain management
• Crisis intervention
• Discharge planning/instructions
• Stroke scale assessment

Initiates appropriate Emergency Protocols. Manages the care of pediatric and adult patients with conditions common to the Emergency Department, such as:

• Cardiac and respiratory distress
• ENT and GYN emergencies
• Wound and orthopedic emergencies
• Neurological emergencies
• Trauma emergencies

The Staff Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, participates in interdisciplinary care planning, provides and/or delegates care, and evaluates patients' responses and progress toward clinical outcomes. Contributes to an efficient and effective work environment through professional communication, documentation, preceptoring, and resourcing others. Supervises Licensed Practical Nurses and other support staff in patient care delivery as described in Nebraska Statute 38.

Responsibilities

• Initiates assessment and reassessment based on patient presenting problems/needs.
• Synthesizes pertinent initial and ongoing patient data to identify nursing priorities, care goals, and desired outcomes.
• Integrates appropriate standards of care into the patient’s plan based on diagnosis and age-specific needs.
• Executes therapeutic and/or supportive interventions.
• Provides education for the patient and family according to their needs, abilities, preferences, and readiness to learn.
• Evaluates patient responses to and effectiveness of interventions.
• Evaluates patient progress toward established outcomes.
• Incorporates cultural considerations into the plan and delivery of care.
• Includes family or significant others in patient care as appropriate.
• Documents patient care and related information according to Bryan Medical Center procedures.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to provide care.
• Facilitates patient transition to the next level of care.
• Serves as preceptor, charge nurse, or triage nurse based on skill development and manager discretion.
• Acts as a resource for students and orientees.
• Assists in the collection of data for medical screenings.
• Anticipates and intervenes to meet patient and family needs.
• Makes appropriate referrals (e.g., Care Management, ED Connections, Voices of Hope).
• Assists the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner in the care of sexual assault patients.
• Participates in continued learning and self-development pertinent to the role.

Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse licensure from the State of Nebraska or approved compact state of residence as defined by the Nebraska Nurse Practice Act.
• Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required.
• ACLS, PALS, TNCC, and ENPC required within the first year of employment.
• Two (2) years of experience as a Registered Nurse recommended.
