STAFF REGISTERED NURSE (ED)

Schedule: Rotating weekends, holidays, and call

About the role

The Emergency Nurse works as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team that includes Board Certified ED Physicians, NPs, PAs, ED Techs (LPN/EMT-A/B/LNA), Critical Care Float RNs, Peer Recovery coaches, and tele-ED services. The Emergency Nurse provides safe, effective, and compassionate care to patients utilizing the nursing process to triage, assess, implement interventions, and provide discharge teaching to adult and pediatric patients requiring emergent, urgent, or critical care.

The Emergency Department sees over 15,000 patients per year and offers a fast-paced, stimulating, and rewarding work environment.

Department scope of service

The Emergency Department is a Level III facility with 13 beds, open 24 hours a day. At least one physician is on duty at all times, with on-call physicians and specialists available within thirty minutes. The department includes “safe rooms” designed for patients experiencing violent behavior or suicidal ideation. The patient population spans all ages, with care ranging from definitive treatment of non-urgent, urgent, and emergent conditions to stabilization and transport of critically ill or injured patients. Birthing Center nursing staff is available for consultation or assistance with neonates, infants, and obstetrical patients.

Responsibilities

• Triage and ongoing assessment of adult and pediatric patients in emergent, urgent, or critical care settings.
• Implement nursing interventions and provide discharge teaching.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including physicians, advanced practice providers, ED techs, and support staff.
• Manage care for patients of all ages, including those with violent behavior or suicidal ideation.
• Stabilize and prepare critically ill or injured patients for transport as needed.

Requirements

• Graduate of an accredited RN program (BSN preferred).
• Recent Emergency Department or Critical Care experience preferred.
• Registered Nurse currently licensed by the State of Vermont.
• BLS Healthcare Provider certification required.
• ACLS certification required within 3 months of hire.
• PALS certification required within 6 months of hire.
• TNCC certification required within one year of hire.
• CEN, STABLE, and ENPC certifications preferred.

Physical requirements

• Lifting up to 50 pounds.
• Eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity.
• Normal or corrected vision and hearing.
• Ability to lift and/or move patients from one point to another.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
• Ability to work with patients, families, and the public during stressful situations.
• Ability to perform keyboarding functions.

On-the-job time is spent in the following physical activities:

• Standing: Up to 1/3 of the time.
• Walking: Up to 1/3 of the time.
• Sitting: 2/3 or more of the time.
• Talking or hearing: 2/3 or more of the time.
• Use of hands to finger, handle, or feel: Up to 1/3 of the time.
• Reaching with hands and arms: Up to 1/3 of the time.

This position requires lifting or exerting force as follows:

• Up to 10 pounds: 2/3 or more of the time.
• Up to 35 pounds: 1/3 to 1/2 of the time.

Special vision requirements include:

• Close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less).
• Color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors).
• Ability to adjust focus (ability to bring an object into sharp focus).

Work environment

• Potential exposure to hazardous materials, body fluids, bloodborne pathogens, and communicable diseases.
• Potential for injury due to physical demands.
• OSHA Category I: Tasks involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues; Universal Precautions required.

Pay

$39.15–$68.16 per hour, based on relevant experience, education, internal equity, and market competitiveness.
