Staff Registered Engineer - Civil - Water

About the role

In this role, you will focus on large-scale water and wastewater infrastructure projects, leading significant portions of facilities throughout the design, construction, and startup phases as a technical specialist or lead. You will have hands-on involvement in developing reports, technical memos, studies, detailed designs, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents. The role includes participation in scheduling, budgeting, contract administration, business development, and proposal preparation. You will coordinate with internal and external team members on moderately complex projects, assist in identifying key client interests, and communicate these to the project team.

Responsibilities

• Perform design of projects from the conceptual and bid phase through design completion based on project manager and client needs.
• Assist the Engineering Manager in maintaining project schedules and budgets.
• Interface directly with clients or sub-consultants under the direction of the Engineering Manager.
• Support business development through writing technical approaches, scopes of work, and client presentations.
• Apply knowledge of civil engineering concepts, practices, codes, and procedures within the water engineering industry to complex projects.
• Develop non-standard design solutions to meet client project specifications.
• Provide leadership, guidance, and mentorship to less experienced engineers.
• Ensure effective communication with other engineering disciplines and the project team.
• Prepare complex engineering deliverables and perform complex research for equipment/material selection.
• Prepare complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles.
• Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
• Plan and conduct independent evaluation, selection, and adaptation of engineering techniques and procedures.
• Review engineering work and assignments of early career professionals.
• Oversee collection, assimilation, and management of data for engineering work; lead smaller production teams; or serve as the responsible charge for a project.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline from a recognized accredited program or equivalent experience.
• Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
• Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements, including criminal/civil background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records search.
• Holds or is actively pursuing an active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements for BV projects.

Preferred Qualifications

• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or ability and interest to obtain PE registration.
• Thorough understanding of water and wastewater design (e.g., infrastructure, conveyance, pump stations/lift stations).
• Ability and motivation to lead portions of complex projects with guidance and mentorship.

Work Environment

• Hybrid or flexible work options may be offered after the first 90 days of employment.
• Typical office environment; occasional construction site exposure with potential for extreme weather, high noise levels, safety hazards, and atmospheric conditions (fumes, odors, dust, gases).
• Physical demands include sitting, walking, talking, hearing, reading, writing, keyboarding, driving, filing, reaching, stooping, crouching, bending, standing for extended periods, and lifting or carrying up to 40 pounds.

Pay

Annual compensation ranges for this role are:

• State of Maryland: $137,916 - $230,328
• State of Virginia: $137,916 - $230,328

Final compensation is determined based on skills, experience, qualifications, internal alignment, geographic location, and other factors permitted by law.
