About the Role

Under the general direction of the Senior Psychiatrist (Supervisor), the Staff Psychiatrist in Mental Health Services is a member of an Interdisciplinary Treatment Team providing general population outpatient services to inmates. The team includes other psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric social workers assigned to a Service Area.

The Staff Psychiatrist performs psychiatric evaluations, participates in treatment planning and case reviews, prescribes medications, and provides crisis intervention and psychotherapy. They also offer consultations and training in treatment approaches to both clinical and custody staff of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team.

Responsibilities

• Perform psychiatric evaluations of inmates.

• Provide crisis intervention and psychotherapy.
• Offer consultations and training to clinical and custody staff on treatment approaches.

Requirements

• Possession of a valid license to practice medicine in California issued by the Medical Board of California.
• Possession of a valid license to practice psychiatry in California issued by the Medical Board of California.
• Board certification or eligibility in psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.

Pay

This classification is subject to Section 5, Hiring-Above-Minimum (HAM) Authorization of the California State Civil Service Pay Scales. The authorized HAM rates are:

• P: $30,259 per month
• Q: $31,136 per month

Effective July 1, 2023, employees in this class who are physically located at and assigned to direct in-person patient care on grounds or at a facility will receive a pay differential equivalent to 15% of their monthly base pay. Eligibility requires providing direct patient care more than 50% of the pay period.

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) reduces the base salary of full-time employees by 4.62% and provides 8 PLP 2025 leave credits monthly for at least 16 months. Part-time and permanent intermittent employees are subject to the same conditions on a prorated basis.

Benefits

• Eligibility for a $10,000 one-time recruitment and retention stipend after six months of employment with CCHCS.
• Eligibility for a monthly recruitment and retention differential during the first year with CCHCS, totaling $5,000.
• CDCR/CCHCS employees may be eligible for a $5,000 referral bonus if the referred candidate is hired and remains employed for 90 days.

Recruitment and retention bonuses may be available for clinicians newly hired with California Correctional Health Care Services.
