About the role

This position is a key on-site technical resource within Nokia’s Delivery and Operations Optics Manufacturing Team to provide support for transitioning from new product development to high-volume production. The Product Engineer will ensure that product designs are cost-effective and manufactured in high-volume, manage products through the manufacturing line, drive overall process improvement, and handle yield and WIP reporting.

Responsibilities

  • Introduce new optical systems into production by collaborating closely with development, operations, and contract manufacturing (CM) teams.
  • Review design specifications (optical, electrical, and mechanical) to ensure cost-effectiveness, manufacturability, and high quality.
  • Drive qualifications of new product components.
  • Serve as a key member of the cross-functional product development and operations team.
  • Review product test plans, methodology, specifications, and manufacturing process flow.
  • Implement Engineering Change Orders (ECOs) based on design or product changes.
  • Partner with process engineers and contract manufacturers for yield and process improvements.
  • Work with component engineering on quality and cost-reduction opportunities, including defining and driving cost-reduction initiatives or alternative sourcing requirements.
  • Drive root cause analysis and corrective actions for field or production failures.
  • Report and summarize product yields and Work-In-Progress (WIP) positioning to the company.
  • Lead meetings to track process and product yield improvements.
  • Transition the manufacturing line to a contract manufacturer (CM) when needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or Physics; advanced degree preferred.
  • 5+ years of direct experience with complex, high-speed optical systems, preferably in the communications industry.
  • Working knowledge of active and passive optical components and modules.
  • Hands-on experience with high-speed optical and electrical test and measurement equipment, control, data acquisition, and testing automation.
  • Experience with products utilizing embedded processors, Ethernet/PCIe switches, FPGAs, DSPs, and power sequencing.
  • Ability to understand designs sufficiently to troubleshoot and debug root causes.
  • Proficiency with statistical analysis.
  • Strong understanding of change controls and process flow.
  • Experience with Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) like SAP.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

The ideal candidate is analytic, detail-oriented, possesses strong quantitative analysis skills, is self-motivated, able to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams, and works well in a fast-paced environment.
