About the role

D-Wave New Haven is seeking a Staff Process Engineer to develop and implement processes for fabricating both current and next-generation Quantum Processing Units (QPUs). The role involves adapting Research and Development (R&D) processes to low to medium volume production, ensuring stability and repeatability through Statistical Process Control (SPC) and in situ metrology. Key responsibilities include:

  • Driving the integration of D-Wave’s integrated QPU fabrication process from development to production
  • Tracking process integration progress and success using tools like JMP and Siemens OpCenterX
  • Designing and executing experiments to improve device quality and process fidelity, and communicating results to the fabrication team and stakeholders
  • Operating various fabrication tools including metal deposition systems, electron-beam and optical lithography tools, and wet and dry etch systems
  • Routine maintenance of tools and facilities, and qualification of new fabrication tools as they become available
  • Designing in situ metrology regimes to monitor production and tool health using SPC

Responsibilities

Responsible for driving the integration of D-Wave’s integrated QPU fabrication process, moving it from development to production. Using tools such as JMP and Siemens OpCenterX to track process integration progress and success, identifying any roadblocks as they appear. Designing and executing experiments to improve device quality and process fidelity, and communicating the results to the fabrication team and other stakeholders. Operating tools such as metal deposition systems, electron-beam and optical lithography tools, and wet and dry etch systems in both the D-Wave and Yale clean room facilities. Routine maintenance of tools and facilities in the D-Wave lab, and qualification of new fabrication tools as needed. Designing in situ metrology regimes to track the production and tool health at all steps via SPC.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of (post-graduate) semiconductor or related industry experience
  • MS or Ph.D in electrical engineering, materials science, or related field
  • Proven track record of driving complex fabrication process development and integration, particularly small-to-medium-batch production
  • Some hands-on experience with troubleshooting and repairing fabrication equipment
  • Expertise in at least one of the following: Through-silicon vias, indium bump bonding/packaging, electron beam lithography

Qualifications

  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to mentor and train junior process engineers and technicians
  • Experience with statistical process control (SPC)
  • Knowledge of clean room operations and procedures
