About the Role
This is a Temporary Float RN position within the Central Staffing Resource Department (CSR) servicing the CVC PACU. The role involves providing direct patient care to multiple surgical populations, including ICU, general care, and outpatient settings.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care to multiple surgical populations (ICU, general care, and outpatient).
- Maintain patient's airway, vital signs, and intake/output.
- Monitor EKG, arterial line, PA catheter, etc.
- Manage pain through PCA and Epidural.
- Participate as a member of the collaborative health team.
- Provide patient and family education.
- Prepare unit for Pre-op patients (IV set-up, review charts for H&P, consent, etc.).
- Provide direct care for Pre-op and PACU patients.
Requirements
- Current licensure to practice nursing in the state of Michigan.
- 2 years of Adult PACU experience within the last 3 years.
- Knowledge of multiple surgical procedures.
- ACLS certification (required).
- Current AHA BLS Certification (candidate must provide proof of certification upon offer).
Qualifications

- Recent experience in Emergency Department or ICU.
- CPAN or CAPA certification.
- PALS certification.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- BSN preferred.
- Experience as a float RN or floating to multiple units.
- Demonstrated flexibility and ability to work effectively with an interdisciplinary healthcare team.
- Demonstrated positive verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated accountability, dependability, and teamwork.
- Expertise in communication and problem-solving within all levels of the healthcare team.
- Ability to work in a team atmosphere utilizing effective delegation skills.
- Knowledge of University of Michigan Hospital nursing policies and practices.
- Participation in continuous quality improvement processes.
- Experience with family-centered care philosophy.
- Initiative in seeking professional growth.
Pay
- Base rate: $55.00/hour.
- Evening Shift Differential: $5.00/hour.
- Night Shift Differential: $3.00/hour.
- Weekend Differential: $5.00/hour.
Schedule
- Commitment: 24 hours per 4-week scheduling block.
- Shift: Day/Evening rotator as needed; hours vary by unit.
- Location: Cardiovascular Center - PACU.
- Expected to float to like units where competent and qualified.
- No guarantee of work at any time; shifts can and sometimes will be cancelled.
- Temporary Nurses in the CSR Clusters are not required to work weekends or holidays.
Additional Information
- This temporary position may meet eligibility requirements for healthcare benefits.
- All CSR employees are required to attend an annual educational Blitz to complete required UM mandatories and competencies (e.g., BCLS every 2 years, Cardiac Arrest training, and maintaining all other applicable certifications).
- Temporary Float Nurses are expected to work all shifts requested unless no work is available.
- Temporary Nurses will participate in a streamlined onboarding/orientation program, with progression dependent on clinical competency, staffing needs, and hours worked.
- Inability to work for 3 consecutive months leads to automatic termination from employment.
- Michigan Medicine conducts background screening and pre-employment drug testing on job candidates upon acceptance of a contingent job offer.
