STAFF NURSE (TEMP) (Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit - 5 (CVICU-5)

About the Role

This is a Unit-Based Temporary RN position in the Cardiovascular Adult Intermediate Care Unit. These positions do not qualify for UMHS benefits, and specific terms and conditions of employment are negotiated at the department level. This role is not covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the University of Michigan and the Michigan Nurses Association and the U of M Professional Nurse Council.

Unit-based temporary employees who work 400 hours in a calendar year become Per Diem employees and are obligated to pay dues or service fees as covered under the collective bargaining agreement. Once the 400-hour threshold is met, the employee remains a union member for the duration of their Per Diem employment. Temporary APRN employees and MVC temporary employees are not eligible for Per Diem status.

Responsibilities

• Provide care in a 10-bed adult intensive care unit for patients who have recently undergone cardiac, thoracic, or vascular surgery, including coronary artery bypass, heart and lung transplantation, heart valve repair, ventricular assist devices, esophageal procedures, carotid re-vascularization, and aneurysm repairs.
• Collaborate with the Advanced Practice Team in patient/family conferences, patient care rounds, and referrals.
• Perform Charge Nurse responsibilities as assigned.
• Assist in research studies and quality assurance activities.

Requirements

• Current license to practice nursing in the state of Michigan.
• 2 years of current ICU or ED RN experience.

Qualifications (Preferred)

• BSN preferred.
• 2 years of cardiovascular patient experience or relevant skills, including at least one of the following: Cath Lab, Cardiac Medicine, Vascular Surgery/Medicine, Telemetry.
• Adaptability to change.
• Demonstrated time management skills.
• Experience with arterial lines.
• Experience titrating hemodynamic medications.
• EPIC documentation experience.
• Ability to prioritize and plan patient care.
• Willingness to accept responsibility for errors and provide open feedback.

Schedule

Shift: Day/Night

Hours: Minimum 36 hours per schedule.

Location: Cardiovascular Center - CVC 5 Intensive Care Unit.

This temporary position may meet eligibility requirements for health care benefits.

• Per Diem or unit-based temporary employees working three or more shifts per scheduling period must work a minimum of two weekend shifts per period (8 hours = 1 shift).
• Those prescheduling two or fewer shifts per period may only add unanticipated shifts and are exempt from weekend requirements.
• Expected to work a portion of scheduled shifts on off-shifts (recommended: 25%).
• Must work shifts during three out of six holiday weeks, including either Christmas or New Year’s week.
• Scheduled after all regular staff per contract language.
