About the Role

Schnabel Engineering seeks an entry-level Staff Geostructural Engineer to support regional and national practices. This position is based in Rockville, MD. The ideal candidate will have a solid understanding of soil mechanics and structural behavior, along with attention to detail and a commitment to professional growth.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting geotechnical field investigations, including soil sampling and drilling.
  • Performing soil and rock analysis to determine suitability for construction projects, involving laboratory testing and interpreting geotechnical data.
  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality engineering solutions.
  • Preparing design calculations and drawings (sketches) using AutoCAD and MicroStation, and providing design support during construction.
  • Observing geotechnical/geostructural-related construction and preparing daily observation reports to ensure adherence to detailed plans and specifications.
  • Supporting report and proposal preparation.
  • Ability to travel and work in the field is required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
  • 0-3 years of professional experience.
  • EIT certification or the ability to obtain one within 6 months of hire.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Positive attitude enhancing problem-solving, teamwork, and a growth mindset.
  • Strong work ethic and continuous self-improvement with confidence and enthusiasm.
  • Effective time management, balancing multiple tasks and responsibilities.
  • Willingness and ability to perform field work and travel, including assignments lasting several months away from the office.
  • Ability to lift 60 pounds and navigate construction sites, enter trenches, climb ladders, and work outside.

Desired Skills/Experience

  • A Master’s Degree in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, or a related field.
  • Prior internship or professional work in a related field (geotechnical engineering, construction, civil engineering, etc.).

Other Requirements

  • Ability to pass a background check, including criminal history, motor vehicle record, and credit check.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screening.

Compensation

The compensation range for this position is between $57,200 to $86,000, with potential variation based on geographic location and other factors. Schnabel remains committed to competitive and equitable compensation for all employees.
