Staff Engineer, Power Integrity
About the role
The Staff Engineer, Power Integrity develops new electrical systems/circuits for various applications. You will research system ideas and draw up plans for these systems, and capture them in schematics and system specifications. Other responsibilities will be testing, simulation, validating and qualifying the systems and make adjustments as needed. You will need to provide support throughout the manufacturing of the electrical systems that have been designed. The role will work in cross functional teams with other designers, customers, manufacturing engineering and project leadership to ensure robust and high quality product development. You will enhance designs with feedback from reviews in areas such as manufacturing, test, supply chain, reliability, industrial design and simulations.
Responsibilities
- Perform target impedance analysis, transient voltage droop, phase margin, and stability analysis.
- Define PDN architecture and design solutions for boards and systems across a wide range of power specifications.
- Lead power delivery modeling, simulation, and characterization for interposers, packages, PCBs, and voltage regulators (VRs) to meet impedance and voltage droop specifications.
- Collaborate with multi-functional teams to design end-to-end power delivery systems.
- Provide guidelines for implementation and feedback to PCB, package, system design and other cross-functional teams.
- Lead hardware correlation on component, board and system level.
- Develop test suites for system-level validation of power domain design margin.
- Provide power integrity support through the design process.
- Drive initiatives to improve processes, procedures and quality.
Requirements
- Proven technical understanding of power supply architectures, VR technologies, power distribution network (PDN) modeling and PCB design practices.
- Working knowledge in 3D/2D EM simulation tools, electromagnetic modeling, and transmission line theory. Skills with associated tools for 2.5D (PowerDC, PowerSI, SIWave, OptimizePI, Sentinel-PI, nSys), 3D Full wave (HFSS, nWave), quasi-static tools (Q3D, nApex) is required.
- Familiar with LTSPICE, HSPICE, Spectre, AMS, and Simplis models or equivalent ones for system-level transient droop analysis.
- M.S. with at least 7 years of experience, or PhD with a minimum of 5 years of experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- M.S and or Ph.D. with academic background in Power/Signal Integrity, Power Electronics and Analog Circuit Design.
- Understanding of power supply architecture covering multi-stage/multi-phase VR technologies, PCB and package design trends and trade-offs, and chip supply design including low- and high-power design methodologies.
- Experience in developing PI/SI methodologies, modeling PDN from system to die, and conducting lab correlation/validation.
- Familiar with Python coding and AI/ML-assisted automation.
- Experience in design and analysis of product power supply solution.
- Deep understanding of VR design principles and the system environment's electrical performance.
- Familiar with lab equipment including but not limited to VNA, real-time scope, spectrum analyzer.
- Work and communicate efficiently in cross-functional teams.
- Excellent documentation and communication skills.
- Work independently, teach and mentor others, and innovate.
- Experience in driving initiatives that improved process, procedures and quality.
- Experience on PCB or PKG design tools (Allegro, Xpedition).
