Staff Engineer, Mechanical (Actuation)
About the Job
The Design Mechanical Engineer is responsible for completing and contributing to the design, development, testing, qualification, and production support of products in a cost-effective and timely manner to meet customer needs and schedules. The engineer works within a multi-disciplined organization and collaborates with other disciplines as necessary, such as other engineers, manufacturing, purchasing, and quality assurance.
Essential Job Functions And Responsibilities
- Design Mechanical Engineers are responsible for designing and developing electromechanical actuators from scratch to meet customer requirements.
- Design and analyze kinematic mechanisms like Slider Crank, Scotch Yoke, and 4-Bar mechanisms.
- Sizing and selecting ball screws to meet system performance requirements.
- Sizing and selecting bearings (radial, thrust, angular contact) to meet load and life requirements.
- Create and modify drawings with appropriate GD&T, document changes, and verify their efficacy.
- Verify Bill of Materials and ensure drawing accuracy.
- Design cost-effective, easily manufacturable hardware considering tolerance stack-ups, assembly ease, customer installation requirements, materials of construction, manufacturing methods, and mechanical and thermal environments.
- Mistake-proofing and disposition of non-conforming hardware and resolving production/vendor issues.
- Perform failure investigations of designs and create/review/approve processes for assembly, test, and related activities.
- Interface with internal and external customers to determine product changes needed for applications.
- Write technical documents for internal and external customers.
- Participate in design reviews (internal and external).
- Support new business pursuits addressing program technical requirements and associated schedules and costs.
- Mentor and guide junior team members.
Qualifications, Knowledge, And Skills Required
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
- Experience designing and testing designs to Mil-Std-810 environments or similar (Humidity, Salt Fog, Vibration and Shock).
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience solving technical problems using a methodical scientific approach.
- Experience in 3D modeling of mechanical components and assemblies, preferably using Creo.
- Experience with electromechanical actuation servo systems and brushless DC motors.
- Experience with finite element analysis for structural, thermal, and dynamic analysis.
- Organizational and task management skills to work on concurrent issues.
- Leadership skills to interface with various teams and disciplines.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes such as additive manufacturing, casting, milling, turning, grinding, drilling, etc.
- US Citizenship and ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
Work Environment
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to conditions typical of a manufacturing/machine shop environment, including, but not limited to, fluids, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise and vibration. The job interacts both in a professional office environment and a manufacturing/machine shop environment. This role uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers/scanners/copiers, and appropriate eye, hearing, and foot protection (as required). Temperature of the work environment may be affected by outside/external temperatures, machining processes, etc. Some travel may be required for this position (15%). Full-time position.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
- Frequently required to reach with hands and arms, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
- Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly required to stand for extended periods (7-8 hours, daily), walk consistently, stoop, bend, turn, balance, and/or crouch.
- Move about the facility.
- Use measuring instruments, hand, and power tools.
- May be required to lift, push, pull, and/or move items weighing up to 50 pounds.
Pay Range
$137,000 to $150,000 per year.
