About the role

Seagate is looking for a Staff Engineer who will report to the Wafer Process Engineering organization at Seagate's Recording Head Operations located in Bloomington, MN. The Wafer MPI team is responsible for scaling new wafer processes and products from the late development space into full volume build. Our goals include improving wafer process manufacturability, throughput, and recording head device performance. The MPI team manages wafer builds and engineering optimizations involving lasers and laser light paths, plasmonic transducers, electronic and magnetic elements, materials selections, and thermal management. This is in support of Seagate's HAMR recording technology. We work in partnership with Wafer Operations, Wafer Process Development, Wafer Design, and Product Engineering.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys being part of a team that produces state-of-the-art products and will keep you excited about your work; contributing their knowledge in a collaborative environment and among some of the brightest minds in the storage business; developing effective solutions to complex engineering challenges; working independently on mission critical, technical process and failure analysis projects; leading projects and/or owning process segments (modules) on a complex build route; working across process disciplines as a generalist process integrator; and acting as a spokesperson and subject matter expert through the presentation of project data and conclusions to management of all levels within Seagate.

Responsibilities

  • Engage during the development of new reader and writer technologies, including Heat-Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR)
  • Focus on process manufacturability of those technologies, bringing them to volume production readiness
  • Prepare and present documented results to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrate good judgment related to technical and business impacts of process change recommendations
  • Design experiments in a way that generates meaningful and accurate results
  • Actively contribute to daily troubleshooting of material, manufacturing process and product design issues
  • May specialize in a specific discipline (lithography, vacuum, plate, CMP, metrology, configuration/product support) within the new process launch space
  • Interact with levels of personnel from Directors
