Staff Engineer, Hardware Design
About the Role
As a PCB Layout Staff Engineer, you will lead the physical design and layout of complex printed circuit boards from schematic capture through to manufacturing. You will collaborate with hardware, power, mechanical, and manufacturing engineering teams to ensure designs meet strict signal integrity, thermal, and mechanical constraints. You will also enhance design guidelines, participate in design reviews, and mentor junior staff.
Responsibilities
- Complex Board Design: Execute layout, routing, and component placement of high-density, multi-layer PCBs (12 to 28+ layers) using advanced CAD software (e.g., Cadence Allegro).
- High-Speed & Constraints: Route high-speed digital, analog, and mixed-signal circuits while adhering to constraints like impedance control, length matching, and differential pairs.
- Power Delivery & Constraints: Collaborate with the Power Design Team to optimize the Power Delivery Network (PDN), manage voltage drop (IR), impedance targets, decoupling capacitor placements, and thermal constraints in high-current AI hardware designs.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with electrical, mechanical, and thermal engineers to optimize board layout for form factor, thermal management, and system performance.
- Design for Manufacturing (DFx): Ensure compliance with Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Design for Testability (DFT) guidelines.
- Documentation & Release: Generate and manage manufacturing release packages, including Gerber/ODB++ files, fabrication drawings, assembly drawings, pick-and-place data, and Bill of Materials (BOM).
- Compliance & Standards: Apply IPC standards and ensure layouts comply with EMI/EMC regulations and safety standards.
- Mentorship: Lead design reviews, establish best practices, and provide technical guidance to junior layout designers.
- Customer & Project Coordination: Participate in design reviews, provide technical feedback, and contribute to project planning and scheduling.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in PCB layout and design, specifically with complex enterprise, high-performance data storage, networking infrastructure, or server and telecommunications hardware.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field (or equivalent industry experience).
Skills
- Strong understanding of signal integrity (SI) and power integrity (PI) principles.
- Familiarity with blind/buried vias, micro-vias, and HDI technologies.
- Expertise in PCB design tools (e.g., Cadence Allegro 22.x and up preferred).
- Knowledge of PCB fabrication and PCBA assembly processes.
- Understanding of IPC standards and EMI/EMC layout requirements.
- Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with customers, vendors, and internal teams.
Work Environment
Duties are performed in a normal office environment, requiring extended periods of sitting and visual concentration. Repetitive manual movements (e.g., data entry, using a computer mouse) are frequent. Occasional travel may be required.
