About the role
Under the supervision of the Engineering Manager, the Staff Electrical Engineer develops creative and technically superior engineering solutions appropriate to each assigned project.
Responsibilities
- Design Solutions (25%)
- Executes high quality design solutions with limited or no supervision
- Delivers engineering design excellence
- Leads development of design concepts
- Develops detailed product documentation that supports high quality production
- Electronics design expertise including analog and digital circuit design, PCBs, microcontrollers, sensors, motors, and power supplies
- Performs PCB layout design or modifications for products using PCB design software
- Analog, digital, & microcontroller design using schematic capture software
- Hands-on experience with electronics development and test equipment such as oscilloscopes, DMMs, power supplies
- Designs, programs, prototypes, troubleshoots, and tests small and medium sized electronics products
- Embedded language programming at prototype and proof-of-concept levels
- Knowledge of RS232, SPI, I2C, USB, Bluetooth, and WiFi
- Works with and leads a team
- Accurately interprets and drives implementation of changes in design based on feedback from management and/or client
- Research (20%)
- Leads and participates in project research and brainstorming teams
- Attends and participates in meetings with clients
- Objectively observes and understands user research inputs
- Participates in usability tests to discover design requirements and validate design concepts
- Participates in observational research as needed to uncover unmet needs
- Performance Management (20%)
- Checks work of other engineers and designers
- Leads and mentors subordinate engineers and designers
- Supports management of scope, schedule, and cost
- Assumes the role of technical leader on assigned projects
- Quality (15%)
- Delivers flawless deliverables to client
- Presents to internal and external audiences
- Manages deliverables and timing for self and for team
- Understands and delivers products that meet Kaleidoscope’s standards and, when appropriate, international standards and regulations
- Business Development (10%)
- Leads the development of proposals and sizing for minor projects or as part of a team on larger projects
- Continuous Improvement (10%)
- Stays abreast of new and evolving technologies
- Maintains expertise in advanced electronics design and programming skills and makes recommendations for investments in skills and technology
- Recommends process changes to improve quality, cost, and schedule
Requirements
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- Minimum BSEE or related degree from an accredited university
- 6-15 years full-time engineering experience

Working Conditions
- Tools and Equipment Used: Computer workstation, typical office equipment, laboratory instrument and measurement equipment
- Travel: Minimal: up to 25% of the time
- Physical & Mental Demands:
- Frequently required to sit at a desk/workstation for long periods of time
- Digital dexterity and hand/eye coordination in operation of office equipment
- Ability to effectively communicate to employees/clients via phone, computer, or in person
- Moderate lifting and carrying of supplies, files, etc.
- Body motor skills sufficient to enable movement around the office environment

- Environment: Work typically performed in both an office and a laboratory setting
