About the role
The position involves leading projects from problem definition to production deployment, designing and deploying AI systems, and ensuring they operate reliably at Walmart scale. The role requires influencing cross-functional teams and balancing research with operational needs.
Responsibilities
- Lead projects end-to-end, from defining the problem to launching production ready solutions.
- Design, fine-tune, evaluate, and deploy machine learning and large language model (LLM) based systems that perform reliably at Walmart scale.
- Influence teams across Emerging Tech through strong technical judgment and partnership, not authority.
- Work confidently in fast-moving, ambiguous spaces where quick learning and iteration matter.
Requirements
- 4–9+ years of experience in data science, machine learning, or applied AI.
- Handson experience building, fine-tuning, evaluating, and deploying ML or LLM driven systems.
- Experience in one of the following areas: NLP, conversational AI, or agentic workflows.
- Deep learning and multimodal generative modeling (text, image, video, or 3D).
- Experience running scalable, production-grade systems that support real customers.
- Familiarity with MLOps practices, distributed training, or inference optimization (especially for deep learning specialists).
- Ability to balance cutting-edge research with real-world operational needs.
- A track record of influencing engineers, product partners, and designers through clear technical insight.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 4 years' experience in an analytics related field.
- Master's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology or related field and 2 years' experience in an analytics related field.
- 6 years' experience in an analytics or related field.
Skills
- Data science, machine learning, optimization models.
- PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, Econometrics.
- Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
- Using open-source frameworks (for example, scikit learn, tensorflow, torch).

Pay
The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00 in Sunnyvale, CA and $132,000.00 - $264,000.00 in Bellevue, WA. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses.
