About the role
Burns & McDonnell is seeking a Staff Commissioning Engineer with a passion for achieving success in project management. This position involves working closely with engineers, architects, construction teams, and owners to ensure project success.
Responsibilities
- Manage and execute commissioning, retro-commissioning, and energy-related projects.
- Plan, schedule, and perform work for small to mid-size projects and support project teams for large projects and programs.
- Interface with owners and facilities managers to develop and implement a commissioning process that supports project acceptance and turnover.
- Prepare commissioning plans, specifications, checklists, and functional test documentation based on Burns & McDonnell standards.
- Review design, equipment submittals, operation and maintenance manuals, start-up reports, checklists, and training programs.
- Perform site visits to coordinate commissioning, evaluate new and existing systems, witness equipment start-up and testing.
- Perform functional testing and document results and performance issues.
- Collaborate with owners, operations and maintenance, design, and construction personnel in recommending solutions for items of non-conformance.
- Aid in the development and refinement of methodologies, tools, and standards in support of a growing national and worldwide commissioning practice.
- Aid in the training of operations and maintenance personnel to maintain commissioned systems and perform a continuous commissioning program.
- Travel may be required to support project execution for the duration of the project/program in the form of field assignments. Frequency of travel will vary based on the different project needs. Travel on short notice may be required. Travel may extend over weekends and holidays.
Requirements
- BS in Mechanical and/or Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited university is preferred, but industry experience will be evaluated.
- Mechanical, electrical, and/or technical system commissioning experience is preferred.
- A minimum of 3 years of direct commissioning or related experience in startups and testing of a variety of facility systems.
- Certification in the Commissioning Process, Energy Management, and/or LEED Accreditation is a plus.
- Strong facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization, and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with different types of stand-alone monitoring equipment including flow meters, temperature loggers, electrical meters, and others is a plus.
- Experience in ASHRAE level energy audits and development of energy savings calculations from retrofits and energy measures identified during retro-commissioning is a plus.
- Experience in central utility plants, healthcare facilities, laboratories, airports, building automation system controls, test & balance, NETA electrical testing, renewable energy, and other specialties is a plus.
- Successful completion of OSHA 30-hour Safety Training Course is required within the first 3 months.

Schedule
The base work schedule will be a five (5) day work week (Monday through Friday) with some exceptions based on the project location. Periodic weekend work and extended workdays may be required for certain projects.
