Staff Backend Software Engineer
About the role
As a Backend Engineer, you’ll work on our backend and infrastructure systems to design, build and maintain a fast and reliable user experience for our customers. You’ll collaborate with other engineers to develop the APIs, data models and services that power Semgrep’s products at scale.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain backend and infrastructure systems to ensure a fast and reliable user experience for Semgrep’s customers.
- Collaborate with other engineers to develop APIs, data models, and services that power Semgrep’s products at scale.
- Integrate third-party vendors into existing first-party code.
- Work with databases, query optimization, and distributed systems.
Requirements
- A strong understanding of databases, query optimization, and distributed systems.
- Comfortable integrating third-party vendors into existing first-party code.
- Experience with Typescript and React on the Frontend, Python, Flask and SQLAlchemy on the Backend, and deployment via Kubernetes and hosting on AWS.
Qualifications
- Strong technical background in software engineering.
- Experience with backend development and cloud platforms like Kubernetes and AWS.
- Ability to learn new technologies quickly.

Pay
The estimated starting annual salary range for this position is $230,000 to $288,000 USD. The actual base salary will be determined based on a number of factors, including job-related skills, relevant experience, qualifications, location, internal equity, and market data. In addition to base salary, total compensation may include equity, variable compensation, and benefits.
Schedule
This is a hybrid role with the expectation you’ll join us 3+ days per week in our San Francisco, New York, Boston or Denver offices depending on team. Remote employment will be considered for exceptional candidates as well.
