Staff Backend Engineer, Offerwall
About the role
We're seeking a Staff Software Engineer to be the technical leader for Offer Delivery, the backend service that powers Unity's mobile advertising and monetization platform. You will set the technical vision, define architecture, influence the roadmap, and drive delivery of a high-throughput, latency-sensitive service that operates on two fronts: real-time bidding into video ad auctions as a DSP and direct offer placement outside the auction flow. This role sits at the intersection of rewarded advertising, advanced fraud prevention, and large-scale data processing, directly impacting the financial success of mobile app developers and the engagement of millions of users globally.
Responsibilities
- Lead the technical design and architecture for Offer Delivery services, features, and critical strategic initiatives in collaboration with senior engineers and managers.
- Build, test, and operate Golang services that power real-time bidding into video auctions (OpenRTB) and direct offer placement outside the auction flow.
- Mentor engineers, set engineering standards, and foster a culture of technical excellence on the team.
- Drive cross-team delivery by ensuring seamless communication and collaboration with product, Ad Viewer, and other distributed teams.
- Ensure high availability and reliability of production services, including participation in on-call rotations and proactive system monitoring.
- Own how targeting, pacing, and supply-side rules are expressed and enforced on the serving path.
- Coordinate closely with auction, machine learning, platform, and product teams whose systems Offer Delivery integrates with.
Requirements
- Track record of owning a significant backend system, setting direction, making architectural decisions, and delivering results through others as well as yourself.
- Demonstrated ability to design and ship large-scale, highly available, latency-sensitive distributed services with complex business logic.
- Strong proficiency in backend development using Go (or clear ability to become effective in it quickly). Working knowledge of gRPC with a willingness to adapt to the best tool for the job.
- Practical experience with observability platforms (logging, metrics, monitoring/tracing) and message bus technologies for managing complex data streams.
- Experience building systems that remain stable through evolving requirements, with the ability to design for adaptability.
- Experience driving technical work across team boundaries and developing engineers around you.
Qualifications
Strongly Preferred:
- Experience building or operating a DSP, ad exchange, or real-time bidding system, and familiarity with OpenRTB.
- Working understanding of supply-side ad mediation concepts such as waterfall vs. bidding, adapter and SDK integration, and how creative-format choices impact demand.
- Background in ad serving, auction mechanics, or programmatic advertising.
Pay
Anticipated base salary range: $200,400 - $260,500. The final offer amount will depend on geographic location, relevant experience, professional background, and skill set. Beyond base salary, this role may be eligible for equity awards and participation in company incentive plans (such as annual discretionary bonuses or sales commissions).
