Staff Backend Engineer

Payments platform processing $4B/yr with profitable unit economics, expanding the payments rails team.

About the role

Design and lead payments rails work across ACH, RTP, and card. You will own major initiatives across the payments platform: designing APIs and event flows, hardening for scale, and setting technical direction for more junior engineers. The team ships continuously—expect a mix of architecture reviews, production debugging, and hands-on delivery on Kafka/Java services and AWS. Hybrid presence in the NYC area is part of the culture for staff-level collaboration.

What we're looking for

• 8+ years of backend experience with a strong track record in distributed systems and high-throughput data paths.
• Proven experience with modern Java, Kafka, and cloud-native services (AWS, Infrastructure as Code).
• Staff-level impact: technical leadership, design docs, and mentoring without needing a large management layer.
• Comfort with hybrid work in the New York area and the ability to lead cross-functional payments initiatives.
