Staff Attorney- The Farmworker Program

The Farmworker Program at Legal Aid Services of Oregon (LASO) is seeking bilingual attorneys (Spanish/English) for full-time and limited duration contract positions. The full-time position is hard-funded and focuses on serving clients in Eastern Oregon with required periodic travel. The limited duration contract position is 12 months, running from July/August 2026 to July/August 2027.

About the Role

Both positions are eligible for a partial remote work option and are based in Forest Grove, Salem, or Pendleton. The Farmworker Program represents migrant and seasonal farm, nursery, and forestry workers in employment, housing, health and safety, unemployment benefits, and civil rights cases. LASO is a non-profit organization that serves low-income clients in civil cases through eight regional offices and two specialized statewide programs.

Responsibilities

• Represent agricultural workers in federal and state courts and before administrative agencies.
• Work with the team to handle a caseload involving a combination of impact litigation and brief service cases, primarily in employment, housing, health and safety, civil rights, unemployment, and tax cases.
• Involvement in non-litigation advocacy, community education, and outreach to agricultural workers and community-based groups.

Qualifications

• Membership in the Oregon bar, eligibility for reciprocity, or willingness to take the next bar exam.
• Ability to communicate legal concepts clearly and work collaboratively with clients and colleagues from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds.
• Full fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required; applicants with developing Spanish skills are encouraged to apply.
• Interest or experience in litigation and/or employment law.
• A high degree of initiative and the ability to take ownership of work while coordinating closely with colleagues.
• A valid driver’s license and willingness to engage in occasional travel (including travel to Eastern Oregon).

Preferred Qualifications

• Proven interest in and commitment to advocacy for low-income communities and other vulnerable populations.
• Demonstrated understanding and commitment to anti-bias principles, cultural knowledge, cultural humility, and addressing systemic racism and other forms of oppression.
• Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed to meet client needs.

Benefits

Compensation is based on a 35-hour work week. Salary range is $66,200 – 73,700 for 0-5 years’ experience; $75,200 – 81,200 for 6-10 years’ experience; and $82,700 - $105,200 for 11-30 years’ experience annually. An additional $4,300 to $5,700 annually is available to bilingual staff, depending on proficiency. In addition, LASO offers a full benefits package including individual and family health, vision, and dental insurance; a 6% employer retirement contribution; generous paid holidays, vacation, and health leave; and paid moving expenses. We are currently in a collective bargaining year, with compensation and benefits under active review.
