Staff Attorney - KC Metro

About the role

The Division of Legal Services (DLS) is seeking a Staff Attorney for the Kansas City Metro Litigation office, located at 615 E. 13th Street, Kansas City, MO 64106. The position focuses on community‑based legal practice in the KC Metro/Northwest Missouri region, representing the Department of Social Services (DSS) in juvenile court matters, collaborating with law‑enforcement, service providers, and family support teams to promote swift and safe resolution of child welfare cases. Internal promotional applicants are encouraged to apply; alternate office space may be available.

Responsibilities

• Manage a diverse caseload of varying issues.
• Represent and provide legal advice to DSS and its divisions.
• Represent DSS in courts and administrative hearings.
• Defend child abuse and neglect findings made by DSS.
• Ensure the confidentiality of information maintained by DSS.
• Work closely with DSS and its divisions, providing legal advice related to DSS services and cases.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor from an accredited institution.
• Membership in good standing with the Missouri Bar.
• Competent research and writing skills.
• Accreditation, licensure, and/or professional license as required by state law (available only to holders of specific post‑secondary degrees).

Qualifications

• Experience in litigation is preferred.
• Background in juvenile, family, and administrative law is preferred but not required.
