Staff Attorney

About the role

The Staff Attorney works under the direction of the Deputy Court Administrator – Chief Legal Counsel and the Court Administrator, assisting with original actions, applications for reopening, and en banc applications; screening cases before panel assignment; performing public duty functions such as answering procedural questions from attorneys and the public; providing backup assistance to other Staff Attorneys and the Administrative Counsel for the weekly motion docket and time motions; and monitoring execution dates for death row inmates convicted in Cuyahoga County. The role also includes performing other duties as directed by court leadership, with duties subject to change to meet court needs.

Responsibilities

• Assist with original actions, applications for reopening, and en banc applications
• Screen cases before they are assigned to a panel
• Perform public duty functions, answering questions from attorneys and the public concerning court procedures
• Provide backup assistance regarding pending cases to other Staff Attorneys and the Administrative Counsel (as‑needed) for the weekly motion docket and time motions
• Monitor execution dates for death row inmates convicted in Cuyahoga County
• Perform other duties as directed by the Court Administrator, Deputy Court Administrators, and the court
