About the role
The Staff Attorney will play a key role in creating and executing the legal and procedural framework for determining eligibility for expungement of criminal records. Responsibilities include conducting legal research and investigations, reviewing and analyzing eligible cases to support preparation of formal recommendations for review by the Cannabis Expungement Board (CEB). The attorney will assist and present recommendations regarding expungement and/or resentencing to the Board and may represent CEB at District Court hearings.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement legal and procedural frameworks for cannabis expungement eligibility.
- Conduct legal research and investigations related to expungement cases.
- Review and analyze eligible cases to prepare formal recommendations for the CEB.
- Present recommendations on expungement and/or resentencing to the Board.
- Represent the CEB at District Court hearings regarding expungement or resentencing.
Requirements
Staff Attorney 1
- JD Degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Current license or eligibility for licensure to practice law in Minnesota (must possess license prior to start date).
- One (1) year of experience in a legal setting, which may include internships, externships, clerkships, clinics, or volunteer activities.
Staff Attorney 2
- JD Degree from an ABA-accredited law school.
- Current license and in good standing to practice law in Minnesota.
- Three (3) years of experience as a criminal law attorney.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in criminal or expungement law.
- Working knowledge of criminal history scores and felony sentencing.
- Experience working with individuals impacted by the criminal justice system.
- Courtroom experience.
- Strong writing and presentation skills.

Employment offers are conditioned upon successfully passing a background check, which may include criminal background, employment history/reference checks, and fingerprint-based records check.
Pay
- Staff Attorney 1: $35.30 - $52.35/hour ($73,706 - $109,306/year).
- Staff Attorney 2: $39.22 - $58.35/hour ($81,891 - $121,835/year).
