Staff AI Application Engineer, Product
About the role
Twelve Labs is building multimodal foundation models and products for multimodal intelligence and orchestration. This role owns and builds internal products to support model evaluation, regression testing, dataset discovery, and agentic context curation. It is the first role on this team, offering high autonomy and full ownership of mission-critical internal products.
Key Responsibilities
- Unify the internal data and evaluation platform.
- Integrate beta access, evaluation, regression, and dataset discovery/cataloging tools into one maintainable system.
- Build a secure access layer over very large data, enabling discovery and querying across cloud environments at petabyte scale.
- Integrate real customer signal into evaluation workflows.
- Support the product org's internal agentic content curation.
Qualifications
- Must-Have:
- Strong backend engineering skills with deep experience in Python, Go, or similar.
- System design instinct—ability to solve ambiguous problems and make architectural decisions.
- Proven track record of building internal products from zero to one.
- Comfortable as the primary engineer building foundations for future team growth.
- Full ownership of products—scoping, building, shipping, and supporting internal users.
- Experience with large unstructured datasets.
- Full-stack capable (center of gravity on backend).
- Nice-to-Have:
- Data platform, lakehouse, or pipeline experience across clouds.
- Reasoning about multimodal unstructured data (video, audio, images, text).
- Building AI agents, MCP servers, retrieval systems, or evaluation tooling.
- Data governance, access control, or PII handling on production data.
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $220,000 - $240,000
