About The Role
The Staff Accountant – Traditional Tax role at Abacus! supports client engagements by preparing accurate and timely federal, state, and local tax returns for high-net-worth business owners across various industries. This individual will assist with tax planning, identify compliance issues, and ensure adherence to tax laws and firm standards. They will collaborate closely with Senior Accountants, Managers, and Partners to prepare and deliver returns, participate in client meetings, and contribute to exceptional client service and advisory support.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare individual, corporate, partnership, and trust tax returns in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
- Aid in tax planning strategies for high-net-worth business owners and related entities
- Research tax issues and provide recommendations to leadership
- Review client documentation for accuracy, identify discrepancies, and propose corrections
- Prepare workpapers and schedules to support the review process
- Meet with clients to gather information, present findings, and deliver completed returns
- Maintain accurate client records and ensure compliance with firm policies
- Monitor filing deadlines and ensure timely submission of returns
- Respond to client inquiries in a professional and timely manner
- Collaborate across tax, audit, and accounting teams to support client needs

Work Environment & Expectations
- Full-time, salaried exempt position
- Standard business hours with flexibility
- Occasional extended hours (40+ per week), especially during peak periods
Location & Travel
Springfield, MO (primarily office-based)
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; Master’s and CPA eligibility preferred
- 1–3 years of tax preparation experience, ideally in public accounting
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
- Experience with UltraTax, QuickBooks (Desktop & Online), and AdvanceFlow preferred
