About the Role

A Senior Transmission Operator (STO) provides management oversight of all aspects of the Company’s electric and natural gas transmission and distribution networks. An STO works on a rotating shift schedule and supervises Engineering Group Operators directly and Customer Services Group Control Center Dispatchers, Call Center employees, and all field forces on-duty indirectly.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise personnel engaged in the 24x7 operation of the electric and gas transmission systems and dispatch functions in the Control Center and Contact Center after-hours, including approval or denial of requests for vacation, shift changes, personal/sick time, and other routine personnel matters.
  • Manage the progressive discipline process of direct reports up to and including suspension and/or discharge if necessary.
  • Maintain Operator shift schedules in tandem with the Director – Distribution System Operations to ensure adequate staffing; review and approve direct reports’ timesheets and perform monthly timesheet audits.
  • Perform training responsibilities for assigned Operators, ensuring progression to and maintenance of full qualification, proficiency, and certification; provide periodic constructive feedback and monitor corrective actions.
  • Develop and maintain a thorough understanding of Operator requirements and expectations, ensuring Operators strive to meet or exceed them.
  • Maintain proficiency with all FERC Standards of Conduct requirements and NERC Electric Reliability Standard requirements for all company registrations; maintain NERC Transmission Operator and DOT Operator Qualification certifications.
  • Understand the Electric and Gas Outage Coordination function, including reliability assessments for real-time and contingency analysis; prepare, review, approve, and schedule all Transmission Switching and Valving Orders; develop real-time daily operating plans.
  • Independently operate the electric and gas transmission systems and take an active leadership role during storm restoration and other emergency response activities.
  • Participate in the NYISO System Operations Advisory Subcommittee (SOAS) and the Restoration Working Group (RWG).
  • Actively participate in operating meetings to promote a positive, engaged, results-driven work environment, ensuring teamwork and collaboration.
  • Continuously seek new process improvements and methods to enhance operational performance and productivity.
  • Perform operating experience and human performance investigations.
  • Participate in the hiring process to fill positions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Mechanical Science, or other technology-related field with prior experience in control room operations, gas/electric utility experience, system protection, military technical, or nuclear training.
  • In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, an Associate’s degree in Engineering, Mechanical Science, or other technology-related field with 3+ years of experience in control room operations, gas/electric utility experience, system protection, military technical, or nuclear training.
  • In lieu of an Associate’s degree, a high school diploma or equivalency with 5+ years of experience in the areas listed above.
  • Willingness and availability to work rotating shifts and successfully complete a personal risk assessment.
  • Ability to achieve DOT Gas Operator Qualification in tasks 59, 60, & 70 within 3 months from hire date.
  • Ability to achieve NERC Transmission Operator certification within 9 months from hire date and complete the System Operator Training Program within 12 months from hire date.
  • Proficiency with computers and computer applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, EMS/SCADA, Transmission Outage application, etc.).
  • Strong interpersonal, planning, organizational, verbal, and written communication skills with high attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and perform duties effectively under emergency and contingency situations.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in electric or gas system operations practices, understanding of power system dynamics, and/or transmission system operations.
  • NERC Transmission Operator certification and DOT Gas Operator qualification in tasks 59, 60, & 70.
  • 1+ years of supervisory experience.

Pay

$114,200 – $171,300 per year
