About the Role

A hands-on Engineer who provides technical direction to other tooling engineers and tool/die repair employees, guides new tool designs, supports Operations to resolve manufacturing issues, reduces scrap, and drives continuous process improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Drive continuous improvement to enhance profitability and efficiencies of Value Streams through process improvements targeting scrap, labor, and downtime.
  • Lead OEE improvement initiatives and cost savings using Lean and Six Sigma techniques such as 6S, SMED, and error-proofing.
  • Establish tooling preventive maintenance (PM) requirements.
  • Participate in tool design reviews with project engineers and support product launches for smooth transitions into manufacturing.
  • Responsible for equipment purchases, including justification for capital expenses, design, specification, and standardization of equipment within manufacturing and safety requirements.
  • Support project engineering in developing new tool designs and manage new equipment process development, timing, budget, setup, debug, and training.
  • Support APQP, DFMEA, and PPAP activities as required.
  • Prioritize tooling improvements and repairs.
  • Actively participate in Lean Six Sigma (LSS) programs promoting continuous improvement.
  • Adhere to all company policies and safety rules.
  • Work extended hours when required.

Requirements

  • 4-year technical degree (Tool and Die) or equivalent experience as a journeyman tool and die maker.
  • 10+ years of experience in metal stamping.
  • Exceptional skills in crash form, draw die, and progressive/transfer design and development.
  • Hands-on role in troubleshooting various types of die tooling.
  • Ability to critique die design concepts for production worthiness and maintainability.
  • Experience critiquing advanced product designs for manufacturability.
  • Hands-on role in evaluating customer concerns and troubleshooting.
  • Strong technical experience with high-tonnage metal stamping presses (mechanical and hydraulic).
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in an automotive manufacturing environment requiring multitasking and prioritization.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and CAD software.

  • Primary Work: Sedentary work involving lifting up to 10 lbs. occasionally, with repetitive hand/finger motion for data input or assembly for up to 8 hours a day.
  • Noise Level: Loud (normal manufacturing conditions).

Work Environment

  • Work near moving mechanical parts: Less than 1/3 of the time.
  • Work/job-related travel including overnight: Less than 1/3 of the time.
